BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Technical Services Coordinator, the Systems Administrator is responsible for installation, availability, problem resolution, recoverability, and performance of the Unix operating system and hardware. This position maintains Unix and other servers, documents the physical layout of the servers, and maintains user access. The position is responsible for application, data, and network security.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Install and configure operating systems and application software; maintain records of work and documentation of configurations.
2. Establish, maintain, and monitor all log-on identifications and access rules, defining specific access to the network, files, and database management systems. Provide single log on for all users. Maintain PeopleSoft application panel security and network login security.
3. Troubleshoot and resolve problems with the operating system software and Unix platform hardware.
4. Maintain, support and tune Unix operating system and applications including SIRSI and
PeopleSoft.
Plan and execute district-wide system backup and recoverability plans.
Configure and maintain Unix network services (i.e., NIS, mail).
7. Install, program, troubleshoot, and maintain network equipment; perform programming changes on network systems; maintain records of work and documentation of configurations.
8. Coordinate with supervisor and project team members to set expectations and delivery of services.
9. Install, program, troubleshoot, and maintain Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area
Network (WAN) hardware and connectivity, including wiring components, servers, switches, hubs, bridges, routers and gateways.
10. Operate a variety of computer equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, network servers, printers, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, scanners, storage disk drives.
11. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Equivalent to AA degree plus four years of direct experience in information systems and two years Unix system administration; HPUX, PeopleSoft, Legato Network and Oracle RDBMS experience highly desired. Unix vendor certification and experience with LDAP preferred.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and/or stooping; occasional to frequent lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 50 pounds or less including feed cable reels and computing equipment; ability to work around high voltage electrical panels, in attics and/or other confining, awkwardly configured, semi-dark spaces; ability to travel and/or drive to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business; subject to frequent to constant visual stress, and repetitive use of hands, shoulders, wrists and forearms for extended periods of time while using a computer keyboard and/or mouse.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving appropriate interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time, and to work effectively under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Primarily works in indoor office and/or computer room environment with limited exposure to inclement weather as needed; subject to frequent contacts with and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone; frequent to constant exposure to computer room operations noise, may work at any College location during day and/or evening hours including weekends and/or holidays on an as-needed basis.
