CLASS TITLE:
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Faculty Director of The Center for Career Studies & Services, develop
and coordinate all aspects of the student employment program to meet student, alumni, district
and community needs; determine student employability on campus and place in on-campus
positions; assist students with all aspects of the job search process, including teaching
workshops and critiquing career-related materials. Coordinate employer recruitment and
employer-related activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Develop and coordinate all aspects of the student employment program to meet student,
alumni, district, and community needs. (E)
2.
Post and publicize on-and off-campus employment opportunities through a variety of
means, including electronic database(s) used by the Career Center; administer database
application(s) for student employment; maintain position information for supervisors and
students interested and/or participating in campus employment; maintain accurate, timely
placement data. (E)
3.
Collaborate with faculty and staff to coordinate employer visits to campuses and
classrooms.
4.
Serve as a resource to student workers and their supervisors regarding applicable district
policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations and legislation; provide
training and resources, such as manuals and workshops, to assist student workers and
their supervisors with achieving compliance and success. (E)
5.
Serve as liaison to Human Resources, Risk Management and Payroll for all student
workers, and to Financial Aid for all Federal Work Study (FWS) students; screen and place
students in appropriate campus positions, including placing all FWS students in campus
positions and/or in positions that meet the Federal Community Service Requirement for
Financial Aid; administer and score filing test for student workers. (E)
6.
Ensure that potential student workers meet eligibility requirements to be hired on campus;
assist students with completing required employment application forms and any additional
required documentation; explain program requirements, rules, regulations and policies;
ensure hire forms are completed accurately and are in compliance with federal and state
regulations and legislations. (E)
7.
Assess students’ workplace readiness; discuss and model positive work skills and habits;
assist students with exploring career interests and occupational choices; develop and teach
workshops and classroom presentations in person and/or online as needed or requested;
refer students to appropriate workshops, placements, and/or campus or employmentrelated community resources; assist students with preparing and editing career-related
materials. (E)

articles and materials for services and events using a variety of media; ensure up-to-date
program information on the Web and all marketing outlets.
9.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records; compile and report placement, demographic,
outcome, and other data regarding services provided and populations served.
10.
Serve as lead coordinator for services and events in program area; support Career Center
team members serving as lead; support Career Center-sponsored events through
announcements, marketing, and participation.
11.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to an Associate of Arts degree and one year of closely
related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise student workers.
CONTACTS:
Departmental coworkers, district staff, students, students, faculty, employers, the general public,
and professional staff at employment-related agencies.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping. Occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less. Ability to work at computer, including
repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices. Ability to travel to a variety
of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications in person, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of
individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis. Ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities. Ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in a busy office and/or classroom environments. Subject to frequent
interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone. Intermittent exposure to individuals acting
in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day
and/or evening hours, with occasional weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local
travel may be requested.
