BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an instructor, assist in the preparation of materials and demonstrations; operate, maintain, distribute and demonstrate instruments, supplies and equipment; tutor students and correct student work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Instructional Assistant I classification is distinguished from the Instructional Assistant II classification in that incumbents assigned to the Instructional Assistant I class are assigned to perform instructional assistance in the preparation of materials and demonstrate the operation and use of equipment and instruments. Incumbents assigned to the classification of Instructional
Assistant II provide instructional assistance in an area using specialized equipment and instruments. Incumbents assist in developing programmed curricula for learning the operation of various microcomputer hardware and software, work with students with limited direct certificated supervision and operate the laboratory.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Assist in curriculum implementation including tutoring students, preparing equipment and materials, issuing and checking in equipment and materials and checking in student work.

2. Assist instructors and students with student projects and problems related to planning and completing projects. Help students to prepare and exhibit work. (E)
3. Demonstrate or describe the proper operation, use and care of equipment, instruments and supplies used in the lab; provide information on resources available to students. (E)
4. Assist in the preparation of equipment and supplies budgets; examine literature on new equipment for recommendation of purchase; consult with vendors as necessary.
5. Assist in the development of programmed curricular components. Attend departmental and college wide meetings. Attend professional growth activities to update and increase knowledge in the field.
6. Assist in the grading of projects and in scoring and marking of tests from an answer key; may notify students of test results.
7. Maintain and perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; maintain equipment and work area in a safe, clean and organized condition; stock and organize supplies, instruments and equipment used in the classroom and lab settings. (E)
8. Perform general clerical duties related to the maintenance and efficiency of the instructional program.
9. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by course work in the assigned subject area or related field and one year closely related work experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in an instructional lab or classroom environment, Exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, steam, moisture, noise, etc. and the required use of personal protection equipment. Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, holidays and/or weekends on an as-needed basis.
