CLASS TITLE:
CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the
District’s custodial services program to include inspecting and supervising the work of custodial
staff, student workers, and janitorial contractor’s at all three district campuses.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Develops and implements work goals, procedures, and work standards for custodial
activities at all three district sites. (E)
2.
Plan, organize, coordinate, inspect evaluate and supervise work of the custodial staff,
substitute custodians, student workers, contract day porters and janitorial subcontractors.
3.
Assign work schedules on-site and off-site to ensure conformity and timely completion of
cleaning buildings and custodial related work orders. (E)
4.
Manage the custodial operating budget and order custodial supplies and equipment;
assure purchase of most economical supplies and equipment; receive, inspect, store,
issue and assure delivery of supplies, materials and equipment. Prepare and maintain
records of custodial supply inventory, work requests, personnel, equipment and
facilities. (E)
5.
Conduct training programs for custodians, substitute custodians, student workers,
contract day porters and janitorial sub-contractor, including in the operations of District
vehicles, electric carts, forklift, floor machines, power blowers, vacuums. compressed air
sprayer, and a variety of power hand tools. Arrange for vendor demonstrations of
equipment and/or best practices from industry experts. (E)
6.
Supervise and evaluate custodial staff including approving monthly time cards for
custodial staff and substitute custodians. (E)
7.
Confer and coordinate daily with district management, faculty, staff and students
regarding work orders, moves, set ups for special events; civic center events, event
clean up and furniture and equipment moves.
8.
Maintain and repair custodial equipment, and perform semi-skilled maintenance duties;
replace fluorescent light bulbs.
9.
Inspect the cleanliness of classrooms, offices, laboratories, theatre, concert hall, gym,
locker rooms, cafeteria, rest rooms and showers. Inspect classrooms and offices for
security and safety; determine and report dangerous and unsightly conditions to
superiors; perform a variety of minor maintenance and plumbing repairs to custodial
equipment and facilities; lock and unlock classrooms as needed.

10.
Plan and coordinate major cleaning projects of the college during the semester breaks
and oversee other custodial activities as needed.
11.
Supervise installation and/or relocation of furniture and fixtures for faculty and staff
offices moves to new locations; respond to emergency calls and provide telephone
consultation on weekends or other off-duty hours as necessary.
12.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, and two years directly
related experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Custodians, Utility Worker, student and temporary workers.
CONTACTS:
Coworkers, staff, faculty, students, vendors, contractors, external agencies, and other
departmental staff.
PHYSICAL EFFORTS:
Moderate to heavy physical labor with constant standing and walking for extended periods of
time; walking over rough or uneven surfaces; frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of
objects weighing up to (50) fifty pounds; frequent bending, kneeling and stooping; manual
dexterity required to operate power equipment safely; including repetitive use of computer
keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to operate District vehicles including fleet cars,
trucks, forklift and electric carts; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as
needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORTS:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to appropriately
respond to a variety of situations and unanticipated stressors; ability to concentrate on detailed
tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities;
ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting
established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Busy, indoor and outdoor environments; intermittent exposure to all weather conditions
including rain and extreme heat; may work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces; work at above
ground locations such as ceilings and roofs and in confined and/or awkwardly configured areas;
work in poorly-lighted areas; may be required to work while using or wearing personal
protection equipment such as respirators, protective gloves, steel toed footwear; possible
exposure to dust, oil/grease, gasoline, diesel fuel, smoke and pollen, high voltage and/or
hazardous materials such as pesticides, herbicides, solvents and other toxic chemicals and
fumes; must work with and around extremely dangerous equipment and machinery with moving
parts; exposure to loud noise levels from equipment and vehicle operation; subject to frequent
contacts with and interruptions by individuals in person or by phone; work assignment may
include day and/or evening hours, weekends and/or holidays at any and all district locations on
an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
