MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: COORDINATOR, VETERANS SERVICES BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Dean of Admissions and Student Support, oversee and coordinate the services and activities of the Veterans Resource Center and Veterans Educational Services; develop and participate in marketing and outreach activities to promote and further enhance the program and services; coordinate with external agencies to bring relevant services to the veteran population; provide oversight for non-instructional services to military affiliated students; supervise services related to the certification and processing of student applications for Veterans Administration (VA) educational benefits, tutorial assistance and work study benefits in accordance with legal guidelines. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Supervise and coordinate all aspects of services and activities of the Veterans Services, including the Veterans Resource Center and Veteran Educational Services. (E) 2. Coordinate with external agencies to bring relevant services to the veteran population and prepare and deliver oral presentations to various audiences including faculty staff, and community groups. (E) 3. Determine program needs, student learning outcomes and assessments, formulate action plans, compile statistical records for reports, and submit appropriate program development plans through program review. (E) 4. Identifies, recruits, trains, and supervises peer advisors. Establishes peer advisor work schedules, and coordinates and conducts peer advisor meetings. Maintains Veteran Peer Advisor work-study employment records, and submits timesheets for payment. 5. Tracks Veteran Information Center (VIC) usage data, and assures that all VIC equipment is in full working order. 6. Initiates and maintains positive relations with the Department of Veterans Affairs and veteran staff on campus. 7. Seeks grant funding to effectively meet program goals. 8. Plan, organize and implement a variety of programs and activities to recruit, retain and assist students. (E) 9. Provide specialized information and advice to students regarding educational and career goals, academic progress, financial problems, disabilities and other related issues. (E) 10. Administer the program budget as assigned, authorizing expenditures. (E) 11. Develop and provide orientations, workshops and activities for students and community groups. Develops veterans campus and community resource materials, and makes presentations to veteran audiences. Maintain current knowledge of college rules, regulations and guidelines applicable to assigned student services areas. 13. Refer students to campus departments or community organizations for assistance as appropriate. 14. Compose electronic and printed information in media such as websites, newsletters, and flyers, publicizing programs and services. (E) 15. Perform related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree and one year directly related work experience. Must either be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident as required for Designated School Officials per 8 C.F.R. §214.3(l)(1)(i). WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Not applicable -- not assigned permanent staff to supervise. May provide work direction to student or temporary workers. CONTACTS: Faculty, staff and students, parents, community members and vendors. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business. EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities. WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily works in a busy office environment; subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by telephone; intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evenings hours including occasional weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
