As such, the effective facilitator applies research-based principles of group development and learning theory within the context of a targeted at-risk undergraduate course. A learning community model demands faculty support and collaboration; thus, facilitators must clarify their role as supportive to, not competitive with the professor. In essence, our main objectives for the program are: to enhance the quality of undergraduate student scholarship; to assist students in achieving academic and career goals; to offer college success tips and effective role-modeling; to provide a low-risk collaborative learning environment; and to assist the university in retaining students through to graduation.
