Student Commencement Speaker Application Guidelines The student commencement speaker is a proud tradition of Temple University. During the spring semester a graduating senior is selected to address all graduates at the University Commencement Exercises. The honor is among the highest distinctions a student can receive. The Student Commencement Speaker will be selected based on the following criteria: I. Graduating senior (August 2011, January 2012, or May 2012) with a minimum GPA of 3.00. 2. Is a representative of the graduating class who has made a constructive social and/or educational impact on the Temple University community. 3. Is well spoken and able to capture the celebration of this capstone event within the time allowed (4-5 minutes). Application process The Applicant must: I. Complete the attached in formation sheet. 2. Submit a written proposed 4-5 minute speech. 3. Submit a one-page personal statement.Provide information about yourself (academic awards, membership in student organizations & honor societies, community service & involvement, career goals) as well as your reason for wishing to represent your cl ass as Commencement Student Speaker. 4. Submit a resume. 5. Include two letters of recommendation (e.g., dean, professors, employers and/or community service representatives). The letters of recommendations must reflect the applicant's strongest qualities. All applicants will be required to present their speeches to the Fox/STHM Selection Committee on Wednesday, February 15 th between 11:00-1:00 p.m. STHM and Fox will each nominate one undergraduate candidate each to the University Student Award Selection Committee. Are you the 2012 Commencement Speaker? If you meet the criteria listed below, you could serve as the Student Commencement Speaker at The Liacouras Center on May 10, 2012. The applicant must be: 1. A graduating senior (August 2011,January 2012, or May 2012) with a minimum GPA of 3.00. 2. A representative of the graduating class who has made a constructive social and/or educational impact on the Temple University community. 3. Well-spoken and able to capture the celebration of this capstone event within the time allowed (4-5 minutes). Speeches should be tailored to the entire university community- reflecting on personal experiences and the significance of these experiences. Each School/College Dean may nominate one undergraduate student. The student will be required to audition beforethe Student Award Selection Committee. Three (3) finalists will be chosen for recommendation to the Academic Affairs Committee of the University Board of Trustees, which selects the speaker. Applications will be available on January 3,2012 from your School/College Dean's office, the Howard Gittis Student Center on Main Campus, the Student Activities Offices on the Ambler and HSC campuses or the Dean of Students Office,304 Howard Gittis Student Center.
