Introductory comments

Kriwoken, Dr E Stratford, Prof JB Kirkpatrick, and others.
This course is offered internally on the Hobart campus, on a 1 year full-time or 2 years
part-time basis. Extensions may be possible for a candidate whose work has been
interrupted by illness.
The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Studies with Honours is specifically designed
for those with a tertiary qualification of suitable standard who wish to gain a first
qualification in Environmental Studies which can then act as a bridge to higher degrees.
It is also appropriate for those wishing to make a career change into an environmental
management area, for those wishing to combine environmentally based skills with their
current specialisations, and for those who wish to increase their knowledge out of interest.
Admission & prerequisites
Applicants should possess a bachelor degree in any discipline, or equivalent.
Undergraduate grades must average Credit or better, unless entry approval is given by the
course coordinator.
Course objectives
The course is designed to demonstrate research ability in interdisciplinary environmental
studies and environmental management
Career outcomes
The course provides entry into research-based higher degree study, and can lead to
employment in environmental management, environmental policy formation, or
environmental education.
Course structure
Students take two of the units required for the Graduate Diploma of Environmental
Studies, as approved by the Coordinator of Environmental Studies, and must also
complete an honours thesis.
Assessment: The Environmental Studies units (50%) are assessed on the basis of essays,
seminars and research projects. The thesis (50%) is assessed by one external and one
internal examiner.
