Visual Identity Minutes of the Meeting Public Relations Conference Room, May 25, 2011 – 3:00 p.m. Present: Committee members: Dave Begley, Tully Burnett, Katie MacInnes, Erin Pauls, Mary Ann Rosenthal, Marian Watters, Bill Delaney, April Goode. Also present: Cathy Cole – director of Marketing and Publications Pyati Rhada – director of the Environmental Center Carrie M. Crouch – Public Relations associate Chair: Dan Dundon Update on New Policy and Procedures Dan Dundon opened discussion by noting that new procedures recommended previously by the committee relating to individualized logos have received the approval of the president and vice presidents. In essence individualized logos need not be brought to the committee for approval but can be approved by deans and/or vice presidents. Summer B Cookout Design T-shirt (Student Government) Dundon requested direction from the committee on behalf of the Student Affairs and its request for approval of a logo they created to be used on t-shirts. o Mary Ann Rosenthal passed out copies of the logo to all committee members and noted that she believes it was a violation of standards. o Tully Burnett suggested the use of Ozzie instead of the UNF Osprey. o Rosenthal then suggested that the logo was in violation of brand standards with use of the bird and therefore should not be permitted. Burnett moved and Dave Begley seconded a motion to deny permission for use of the t-shirt design. The Visual Identity Committee Members voted unanimously to approve the motion. Environmental Center Customized Logo Request The Director of the Environmental Center, Rhada Pyati, opened the discussion by requesting the use of the Environmental Center’s existing “e-leaf” logo along with UNF’s approved visual elements in their own customized logo. o Rhada explained how the Environmental Center is one of the few intercollegiate centers at UNF and wants its logo to be more identified with the University. o Rhada also explained how the Environmental Center does not receive extensive money from marketing products other than one book it sells. o Dundon suggested that the committee limit itself to a policy discussion on whether or not to authorize a customized logo rather than getting involved in the particulars of a design. He suggested if the committee authorized such a customized logo then a graphic designer with Marketing and Publications be directed to work with the Environmental Center to come up with an acceptable design. o Rosenthal mentioned that UNF has implemented the same brand strategy since 2005 and she was therefore hesitant to give approval for fear that other centers would seek the same kind of approval for customizable logos. o Begley said he thought the committee would be going down the wrong path by approving the customized logo. o Dundon read an e-mail he received from committee member Mike Boyles who was not able to attend. He opposed the customized logo request. However, he suggested one possible compromise might be to use a standard UNF logo in green color instead of traditional blue for the Environmental Center. Rosenthal moved and Begley seconded a motion to deny the request for development of a customizable logo for the Environmental Center while allowing the continued use the “e-leaf” symbol as a graphic element under certain circumstances. The motion was unanimously approved. Chairmanship Dundon informed the committee that he would be stepping down as chair of the Visual Identity Standards Committee. He said he had assumed the chair position in an interim capacity following the resignation of Dave Roman, the previous director of Marketing and Publications. Cathy Cole, the director of Marketing and Publications, will become chair of the committee as required by the bylaws. Athletics Logos April Goode from Athletics showed the committee a copy of different acceptable and unacceptable Athletics logos. She agreed she would submit the logos for full committee consideration so they could officially be incorporated into the Visual Identity Standards. Meeting was adjourned at 3:57pm. Respectfully submitted, Carrie Merideth Crouch
