October 1 – Ensuring Instructional Effectiveness Workshop (12-2 pm – UC 206) - 28
Mary Lee Peck - Professor Emerita, Ohio Dominican University
Ensuring Instructional Effectiveness
This workshop focuses on the particular knowledge, skills, and dispositions of instructors that impact
student learning. That the teacher is the key to student learning has long been validated by research and is
commonly accepted as a universal principle that impacts the quality of education. It certainly follows,
then, that faculty assessment with relevant feedback must become common practice in higher education in
order to ensure student learning. The peer-assessment program to be introduced was developed by two
senior faculty members and beta tested across a wide variety of institutions. The rubric used provides a
common vocabulary for discussing the important elements that impact student learning and also provides
a valid, fair, and reliable method for assessing instruction in a systematic way. The program provides an
excellent tool for new faculty who are just beginning their IHE teaching experience and for seasoned
faculty seeking relevant documentation for tenure and promotion.
