Ithaca (IC) 2 College Demonstration Projects Periodic Update Report Project Title: IC Net Principal Investigator: Greg Dunbar Department: IC’s Information Technology Services School/Division: N/A Project Co-Principal Investigators (if any): David Weil Reporting Period: I. Fall 2009 ____X____ Spring 2010 ________ Fall 2010 __________ Spring 2011 ________ Executive Summary of State of the Project: Since being chosen as one of President Rochon’s (IC)2 Demonstration Projects, IC Net has come a long way. First and foremost, the development of a new website, the core project behind the IC Net initiative, is currently underway and nearing its first round of testing. This comes after months of researching the various elements of the site that would be necessary for it to accomplish its goals. On the students end, a student organization was formed to bring members together to discuss and brainstorm problems that could be eliminated by the IC Net web space. This student organization also focuses on marketing and providing feedback to administrative designers of the site. 2 (IC) Periodic Update Report Page 1 of 4 II. Key Accomplishments to Date (or Since Last Report): a. As mentioned above, the online aspect of IC Net is nearly completed and close to its first round of testing. b. A student organization has been formed and stays active, anticipating the release of the site. III. Key Challenges to Date: a. Promoting an accurate understanding of what the project will accomplish. b. Soliciting student participation. IV. How were these Challenge(s) addressed: a. One of the most difficult aspects of the project has been gathering support from the student body. Both of our biggest challenges involve the students fully understanding the idea behind IC Net in its entirety, but this is simply due to the fact that, up to this point, IC Net still only exists as an idea. b. Once the website is open for public viewing, IC Net will present a tangible element to its initiative that will allow students to explore, discover and finally understand the purposes and methods behind itself. This will become our biggest advancement against the challenges we have faced thus far, and should change public interest drastically. c. Another route I have explored to initiate understanding and participation in the project is establishing a student organization of the same name, where students can pinpoint certain elements they feel valuable for IC Net. V. Expenditures to Date: N/A – I’m not sure of this figure, but our only expenditure would be toward ITS’s construction of the website 2 (IC) Periodic Update Report Page 2 of 4 VI. Project Assessment: Project Goal Actions Create an online webspace to house and accomplish IC Net’s goals and desires including creating a more collaborative campus. Development brought to ITS, collaborative discussion between students and administrators regarding the problem being addressed and solution to fix it. 2 (IC) Periodic Update Report Measure(s) Outcome(s) Next Steps The web space will be first seen in the coming days and feedback/revisions will begin. Page 3 of 4 VII. Student Learning Assessment: Student Learning Objective (SLO) Method of Instruction (How was this SLO taught) Engage and interest students with the idea of IC Net Through a formed student organization and attendance/promotion and different campus events. 2 (IC) Periodic Update Report Type of Measure (Direct and Indirect) Indirect Outcome It will be easier to gauge student support when the website is released and participation can be numerically measured. Possible Reason for Outcome (interpretation) Without a tangible product (such as the website), it is hard for a student to fully engage in an idea and devote time and energy to it. Revision (if any) Once the website is released, a better understanding will result. Page 4 of 4
