Ithaca (IC) 2 College Demonstration Projects Periodic Update Report Date of Submission: December 18, 2009 Project Title: Classical Opera and Contemporary Musical Theater Principal Investigator: Brian DeMaris Department: Performance Studies School/Division: Music Project Co-Principal Investigators (if any): Reporting Period: Fall 2009 Executive Summary of State of the Project: Project planning is still underway, as planned. Not without challenges, the project is on schedule as per the project time-line outlined in the original final proposal. Key challenges have been adequately addressed with the valuable input and aid of Dean Gregory Woodward, Associate Provost Bashar Hanna, and Provost Kathleen Rountree. The next step for the project is to formally contract the recruited faculty advisors as soon as possible, and for said advisors to begin planning the course in February. 2 (IC) Periodic Update Report Page 1 of 4 I. Key Accomplishments to Date (or Since Last Report): A. Created job descriptions for faculty advisors B. Determined with the aid of Associate Provost Bashar Hanna and Dean Gregory Woodward, that the course will be a full year course encompassing Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semester that 16-20 student will enroll in for 2-3 credits. The course will be offered through the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies so that it may be accommodated into any degree program at the discretion of any dean or department chair. C. Submitted job announcement for faculty advisors in Intercom newsletter (see “Key Challenges” below). D. Formally enlisted Paula Murray-Cole (Assistant Professor, Theater Arts) as faculty advisor II. Key Challenges to Date: A. Recruitment of faculty outside of the School of Music and Department of Theater Arts has been problematic. Many faculty site lack of support for the IC(2) initiative in general or busy schedules. B. Intercom ad was not visible enough III. How were these Challenge(s) addressed: A. Provost Rountree and Dean Woodward suggest enlisting only 2 faculty advisors outside of the School of each with 3 credits of release time (as opposed to 1). Music, and providing B. Brian DeMaris and Paula Murray-Cole will be meeting with Sean Eversley Bradwell (Assistant Professor, Culture, Race, and Ethnicity) to entertain the notion of his serving as the second faculty advisor.
