Thomas Aquinas Spring 2011 Student Learning Outcomes Students will be able to read, translate and interpret ancient Latin texts at an advancved level. Students will develop an enhanced understanding of written and spoken English Students will develop an understanding of other cultural traditions, expanding their cultural experience and being presented with fresh perspectives on their own cultural assumptions and traditions Students will develop an understanding of human experiences and cultures through close reading and critical analysis of history Students will be able to research, synthesize, and draw reasoned arguments from the evidence of history Course text Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae Examinations: There will be two examinations, one at mid-semester, the other at finals, covering material from the preceding half-semester. Each examination will have seen passage (s), and a shorter sight passage. Paper: Each student will complete a substantive research project. Oral presentation is to be during the last week of classes, with an annotated bibliography due during exam week. The project is to be on aspects of language, literature, history related to our author. Class participation: Regular preparation and class participation are expected, and will affect your grade. Foreign language study is such that certain aspects of one's performance cannot be judged by examinations, but rather by class performance. 25% of your final grade will be based upon daily class participation. Effective class participation assumes preparation of daily assignments before class, and therefore submitted homework will be part of the assessment. Class attendance.
