Applying for Degree Candidacy is a checkpoint for MAE and MAT students before completion of the program and graduation. Students in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and the Master of Arts in Education (MAE) programs who have been formally admitted to graduate study shall apply for approval as Degree Candidates during the semester in which eighteen (18) semester hours of graduate course work will be completed.
Purpose: Purposes for the Degree Candidate approval process include:
A review of the progress the student has made toward the degree at, approximately, the halfway point
Development of a written plan to complete the remaining course work required for the degree
Tangible evidence of progress toward the degree and encouragement of the student to complete the degree
Identification of a topic and format for the Capstone project (MAE only)
Procedures: It is the responsibility of the student to apply for approval as a Degree Candidate. The application is to be submitted during the semester in which eighteen (18) semester hours of graduate credit will be completed . The application must be signed by the student’s advisor(s), and a current copy of the student’s degree audit attached. Completed and signed forms are to be submitted to the Director of Graduate Education Programs, Dr. Kristin Bourdage Reninger, who will compile and check all applications prior to submission to the Graduate Admissions Committee. The Graduate
Admissions Committee will examine the record of each applicant and will vote to: ADMIT, DEFER or DENY the student’s application. The student will be notified in writing of the action of the Graduate Admissions Committee, and, if needed, conditions or concerns expressed by the Committee will be included. Actions of the Graduate Admissions Committee with regard to admission to the Graduate Degree Candidacy are subject to due process and appeals procedures outlined in the
Graduate Bulletin and Teacher Education Program booklets.
