Cc: Novick, Lloyd Subject: RE: Econ PhD "public health economics" field Dear Dr. Ericson: I am most supportive of your proposed Economic PhD program, particularly the plan to add an applied microeconomics field in “Public Health Economics” I have no difficulty with your use of the term public health. I welcome the interest of your department in this field. My perspective is that this initiative will add to the existing collaboration between our two Departments and enhance our teaching, research and service priorities. I have reviewed the catalog copy you have provided as well as the information on the two courses: ECON 8660 and ECON 8670. As I suggested in our recent discussion, there are a number of faculty members of the Department of Public Health that can add to the teaching and research activities outlined in your proposal. Likewise, your enhanced capacity in the areas outlined in this proposal (financial markets; cost analysis; cost effectiveness analysis; cost benefit analysis, etc) will be helpful in the formulation of public policy important to community health. I look forward to your meeting with our faculty later this week so we can continue our discussions. We are prepared to assist you in the implementation of this program. Lloyd F. Novick Lloyd F. I look forward to meeting with you and your team tomorrow to discuss our proposal. I am also writing in the hope that you might be able to provide us with a brief note indicating that you have read our proposal, and that Public Health has no objections to it. Indeed, a statement of support and expectation of potential synergies between our programs would be greatly appreciated. GCC and the Academic Council have requested such a note before December 1st, in order to move our proposal forward in a timely manner. So please let me know if you have any concerns that we need to discuss and iron out. Sincerely, Rick Richard E.
