5. Justification (must cite accreditation and/or assessment by the graduate faculty) for new course
or course revision or course renumbering:
Based on an assessment of the Occupational Therapy Program, as required by the Accreditation Council of
Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), Standard A.1.5 that identifies that Master’s Degree Level
Educational Program for the Occupational Therapist – Submit a Report of Self Study and other required
reports (e.g., Interim Report, Plan, of Correction Progress report) the graduate faculty members have
identified that this course content needs to be completed by all students. ACOTE Standard B.8.6
“Demonstrate the skills necessary to design a scholarly proposal that includes the research question,
relevant literature, sample, design, measurement, and data analysis.” This course meets this standard and
reflects the changes from a required course for only non-thesis students to all students because the content
is needed for thesis students to be adequately prepared to complete thesis within 6 credits. The
departmental graduate faculty request that this be a required course for all students.

6650. Conducting Research in Occupational Therapy (3) P: OCCT 6200, 6250, 6600.
Design and implementation of research proposal that contributes to knowledge base of
OT.

Content to be required by all students as a core requirement. Delete the prerequisite of 6300 and 6350, as
these are not needed for this course, change wording to be appropriate for all students.

Readings will be selected by student and faculty mentor based on research topic. These topics may
include: assessment, intervention, outcomes measures, professional interactions, professional ethics.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate critical thinking skills while engaging in professional topics
selected for discussion with mentor.
2. Engage in self-dependent learning as demonstrated by progression of literature
review paper.
3. Practice ethical standards as they pertain to research.
4. Complete a literature review.
5. Demonstrate the skill to implement the research process to answer the research
question.
6. Demonstrate the ability to collect data effectively.
7. Analyze research evidence for the decision making process.

grade is removed when the course is successfully completed and replaced
with a grade of
“R”. The grades in these courses are not included in meeting the cumulative
“B” average required for graduation.
