5. Justification (must cite accreditation and/or assessment by the graduate faculty) for new course
or course revision or course renumbering:
The graduate faculty of the ECU Department of Chemistry
have identified a need for a non-thesis track in the MS
Chemistry program. This track will be used to graduate
students that have completed all coursework requirements but
have been unsuccessful in obtaining sufficient research results
to prepare a thesis (research skills requirement will still apply),
or industrial students who wish to obtain a MS degree utilizing
their current research projects at their place of employment.
This course is the substitute for CHEM 7000 (thesis) in the
research based track and will be used by the student to
complete the major paper requirement of the non-thesis track

May count a maximum of 3 s.h. P: Non-thesis CHEM major;
consent of advisor. Formulate research project demonstrating
principles and procedures used to recognize, state, solve, and write
problems of chemical importance. Requires formal seminar
presentation of completed project and paper.

appropriate chemical literature search tools and select
original literature sources (available through the ECU
library) for preparation of a comprehensive review of the

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
• Recognize and research topics of current relevance to
chemistry.
• Prepare a comprehensive review of the assigned topic.
• Prepare and defend an original research proposal
c. Course topic outline
This course is the equivalent of CHEM 7000 (thesis) for nonthesis degree candidates in the department of chemistry. In
consultation with their advisor, the student will select an
appropriate area of interest, prepare a comprehensive
review, listing of research skills acquired in the program, and
prepare an original research proposal.
d. List of course assignments, weighting of each assignment, and grading/evaluation system
for determining a grade
At the completion of the course, the student will have
prepared the comprehensive review (10-30 pages), listing of
research skills (2+ pages), and the original proposal (5-10
pages). The student will then defend this combined document
to an examining committee (Advisor + 2 additional Graduate
Faculty members). Successful defense will result in a grade
of R (prior to completion the transcript would read Q).
