5. Justification (must cite accreditation and/or assessment by the graduate faculty) for new course
or course revision or course renumbering:
An ongoing assessment by the Graduate Faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy determined the
need to include additional material related to pain mechanisms and treatment to the current curriculum. The
information included in this course exceeds the minimal standards for accreditation of Physical Therapy
programs as they relate to this body of knowledge. The major objective of this course is to teach the student
about advances in the area of pain biology, demonstrating the impact on physical therapy practice and
treatment patterns. This course will add to the existing electives offered in our curriculum offering
advanced knowledge on the pathophysiology and treatment of pain. Emphasis of this course will be placed
on evidenced based research and practice.
