5. Justification (must cite accreditation and/or assessment by the graduate faculty) for
new course or course revision or course renumbering:
The graduate faculty of the Counselor Education program met and determined that
COAD 6991 must be revised to be aligned with current accreditation (CACREP,
2009) and state licensing standards and professional language. These changes are
critical for the Counselor Education program to be in compliance with academic
requirements for licensure by the NC Board of Licensed Professional Counselors.
Consequently, without these changes, our students will not be able to be
academically eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in NC.

6. Course description exactly as it should appear in the next catalog:
6991. Counseling Internship I (3) Requires both university and field supervision. P:
minimum grade of B or better in COAD 6482 and a minimum grade of B or better
in either COAD 6406, 6411 or 6415. Supervised counseling experience including
direct service provision at site specific to professional specialization.
7. If this is a course revision, briefly describe the requested change:
The faculty are requesting that the course be renamed to be consistent with
contemporary professional language and that the course description be revised to be
consisted with expectations of the course, national accreditation standards and state
licensure requirements. The course is currently named Counseling Internship and
the faculty request that it be renamed Counseling Internship I to indicate that it is
now one of two required internships.
Additionally, changes to the program description are requested in order to broaden
the scope of the course in order to bring it into alignment with CACREP
accreditation standards and the NC LPC Board state licensure requirements.
Finally, faculty members are requesting to add prerequisites for this course,
including COAD 6482 and either COAD 6406, 6411 or 6415 with a grade of B or
better. The faculty met and determined that for students to be best prepared for the
responsibilities associated with the Counseling Internship I, they must have
completed COAD 6482: Supervised Counseling Practicum and the course associated
with their chosen professional specialization, either COAD 6406: Counseling in
Schools, COAD 6411: Student Affairs and College Counseling (formerly Student
Development and Counseling in Higher Education) or COAD 6415: Clinical Mental
Health Counseling (formerly Agency and Community Counseling). The faculty have
approved the proposed revisions.

a. Attendance is mandatory! Missed classes will require make-up
sessions. It is critical for this course that each student come prepared
to give and receive helpful, critical feedback regarding counseling
