1. All entries in this Department are subject to the General Rules, found at the front of
the Show Book and here. (Read these general rules carefully.)
2. Each exhibitor must be regularly enrolled in Logan County 4-H before March 1, 2011
and in the respective project he or she is showing by the required project date. The
animal must be from his or her project.
3. If some questions should arise regarding the qualifications of an exhibitor, the local
leader of the respective club will be asked to certify in writing the exhibitor’s
qualifications. This will be acted upon the Livestock Committee and their decision
shall be final.
4. ENTRY BLANKS – Each club member will be furnished a 4-H entry blank on which
he or she will make only the entries in the 4-H department. JUNIOR AND OPEN
CLASS ENTRIES SHOULD BE MADE WITH THE FAIR ASSOCIATION AT THE
FAIR SECRETARY’S OFFICE.
5. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE MADE IN PERSON AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE BY
THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2011 AT 4:30 P.M. THIS INCLUDES STATE FAIR JUNIOR
LIVESTOCK ENTRIES (Both entry AND Entry Fees for State Fair)!!
6. Check each specie section for specific rules regarding numbers to be shown.
Lacking specie rules, exhibitors are limited to one breed and two entries per class.
7. 4-H livestock except Beef and Dairy must be in the livestock barns no later than noon
on Tuesday, Aug. 2. A livestock committee representative will check in livestock
upon arrival. (Dairy must be on grounds by 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2. Beef must
be on grounds by noon on Wednesday, Aug. 3)

8. Birthdates and ownership dates shall correspond with those listed in various
departments.
9.
Registration papers must be in the first and last name of the exhibitor (not to include
farm names, initials of 4-H’ers, family names, etc.) and date of ownership as shown
on registration papers must comply with 4-H project starting dates. Registration
papers must be in exhibitor’s possession at fair.
10. Health regulations as listed in the 4-H Show Book must be followed. Health and
registration papers will be checked before showing.
11. A 4-H’er may show another 4-H’ers project if the other 4-H’ers absence is approved
ahead of time with the Youth Committee, or if a member has 2 projects in a class.
12. All animals are to be shown by 4-H owner except when two entries are made in the
same class, then 4-H owner can have another Logan County 4-H exhibitor show the
second animal.
13. Exhibitors in this department will not be required to pay entry fees, stall rent or
purchase an exhibitors ticket, if these are the only classes entered. If the exhibitor
enters open classes, an exhibitors ticket and entry fee must be paid. 4-H exhibitors
will receive a pass and free stall rent, but must pay stall and pen rent for open
classes.
14. ALL PENS AND STALLS MUST BE CLEANED WHEN LIVESTOCK IS REMOVED
FROM PENS, OR EXHIBITOR WILL BE CHARGED $5.00 PER PEN AND STALL
FOR CLEANUP.
15. The Livestock Committee will make all final decisions in the Livestock Department.
16. For SHOWMANSHIP CLASSES – SIGN-UP IS AT THE SHOWS ON SHOW DAY.
17. Care of Animals Statement – Each owner shall provide for each of his or her
animals sufficient quantity of good quality, wholesome food and water; adequate
shelter and protection from the weather; veterinary care when needed to prevent
suffering; and humane care and treatment. No person or owner may beat, cruelly
treat, torment, starve, overwork or otherwise abuse any animal. No owner may
abandon any animal where it may become a public charge or may suffer injury,
hunger or exposure.
18. Ethics Training – 4-H’ers exhibiting in Beef, Dairy, Horse, Sheep, Swine, Goat
and Poultry must complete 4-H/FFA QA & E training if you were 10 or over on
September 1 prior to the Fair. Ethics training once in your 4-H career is
acceptable.

Each exhibitor will be required to sign an ethics statement on the entry sheet
similar to the Illinois State Fair Junior Show. “Dying or artificially changing the
color of an animal is prohibited. Coloring agents may only be used up to the hock
(knee). Powders are not allowed on any part of the animal. Animals may be given a
white towel test as they enter the show ring. Cattle are to be shown in their natural
conformation. The use of FALSE TAIL HEADS is prohibited. The addition of HAIR,
HEMP, or ANY SIMILAR SUBSTANCE to any part of an animal is prohibited. No tail
ties will be allowed for breeding stock or steers. Excess adhesive on the legs beyond
what is needed to groom the animal’s hair is grounds for disqualification.” The
consequences of any discrepancy regarding this rule will be addressed
immediately by the following steps: NOTIFY SUPERINTENDENT
IMMEDIATELY; STOP THE SHOW AND CALL A MEETING OF THE YOUTH
COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND THE SPECIES COMMITTEE WHO ARE PRESENT,
DO NOT RESUME SHOW UNTIL COMMITTEE MAKES A DECISION. IF “YES”
THE RULE HAS BEEN BROKEN THEN THE 4-Her WILL BE DISMISSED FROM
ALL AREAS OF THAT SPECIES. Only immediate and household family
members, and Logan County 4-Hers and Project Leaders may help 4-Her with
hands-on fitting and grooming of animal. If 4-Her needs additional help the
day of show, a prior written letter must be submitted before entries close for
approval.
19. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility that tattoos are in proper ears and legible in
accordance with registration papers. It is also the exhibitors responsibility that
breeder produces papers for purebred animals. All purebred crossing scales with
improper tattoos/ear notches, non-corresponding and registration papers (to be
brought to scales) will be disqualified as a purebred and moved to commercial
classes.
20. General livestock rule items not covered in Logan County 4-H Showbook will go by
State Fair Guidelines (Refer to Illinois State Junior Book available at the Logan
County Extension Office)
BEEF CATTLE
Thursday, August 4, 8:00 a.m.

2. Registration papers for heifers will be checked by the Assistant Superintendent from
2:00 – 2:30 p.m. the day before the Heifer Show.
3. All beef animals must be exhibited regardless of the number in a class.

4. Steers and heifers will be tied by clubs (if possible) in the cattle barns. 4-H Scramble
calves will be grouped together, NO exceptions.
5. Steer classes will be weighed in Wednesday afternoon August 3, beginning at 1:00
p.m. Each breed will be divided into weight classes by the Superintendent and
weighmaster after weigh-in is completed and will show in those classes Thursday.
6. Artificial coloring of animals will not be allowed above the hocks and animals found
being artificially colored will be disqualified. Beef Superintendents shall be
responsible for toweling procedures and for enforcement of rules.
7. Warts are a big concern. It will be left to the discretion of the County Fair Vet if an
animal will be disqualified due to warts on an animal.
8. Personalized Show Shirts may be worn except during showmanship.
9. Must declare breed in February (at weigh-in time) and confirm breed with registration
paper in June. If no paper in June the animal will show with crossbreds. No
crossbreds will be allowed to go back to a breed.
10. Show order will be as specified in book.
11. Health papers will be checked on Wednesday, August 3, between 2:00-2:30 p.m.
at the Show Pavilion. (see cattle health regulations in white pages at back of
showbook)
12. Animals do not have to be fitted for showmanship classes – it shall be the exhibitors
choice whether or not to fit for showmanship.
13. Grand Champion will be chosen from breed winners and Champion Crossbred.
Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from remaining class with the reserve in
class to the Grand Champion brought in. A Champion and Reserve Champion
Purebred will be selected, if not selected in Grand Champion drive.

STEERS
Entries in steer classes must have been dropped after January 1, 2010
Beef steers must have been owned by February 1, 2011.
Exhibitors in the beef steer division may enter two steers (three if one is a scramble
steer), and they need not be of the same breed. All steers must be tattooed and
weighed. All steers will be mouthed at the official County weigh-in Wednesday
afternoon at the same time that they are weighed. No steer will be allowed to show
regardless of birth date that has more than one pair of its milk teeth replaced by
permanent teeth, and the permanent teeth cannot be advanced enough to be in
wear. The decision of the examining veterinarians will be final.
Final decision of weight classes will be made at the scale.
Show order will be Black Angus, Herefords, Shorthorns, Simmentals, Papered
Other Breeds/Red Angus, Crossbreds and Non-Papered Breeds. Grand Champion
and Reserve Grand Champion Over all Breeds.
A Top Rate-of-Gain Steer will be chosen, announced at the conclusion of the steer
show and presented an award at that time.
Steer Blood Testing Rule: The Logan County Youth Committee reserves the right
to blood test the Champion and Reserve Champion Steers of each Purebred Class

at the Logan County 4-H Show for type to verify breed characteristics. Any protests
must be filed in writing at the 4-H Office within 24 hours after the conclusion of the
4-H Beef Show. The protesting party will pay all blood testing expenses if tests are
proven negative; if found positive, the 4-H’er will be responsible for all costs. Any
breeder and/or exhibitor found to be in violation will not be awarded premiums and
will be barred from exhibiting at the Logan County 4-H Show for the following one
year. The second occurrence will bar that 4-H’er for his/her 4-H career from
exhibiting. All premium and sale money will be held until tests are returned.
Anyone found in violation: Sale money over market price will be refunded to the
buyer.
8.
No 4-H cattle will be allowed to show with horns. Scurs are acceptable.
9.
Must inform breed in February (at weigh-in) and confirm breed with registration
paper in June. If no paper in June the animal will show with crossbreds. No
crossbreds will be allowed to go back to a breed.

8. Recognized Breed Associations will include: American Hereford Assoc., American
Polled Hereford Assoc., American Shorthorn Assoc., American Simmental Assoc.,
and American Angus Assoc. Females registered in any other Breed Associations
must show in Papered Other Breeds classes.

COW/CALF CLASS
Cow must be owned by 4-H’ers when bred. All breeds show together. Must have
papers on cows. (Each 4-H’er can exhibit two cow-calf pairs if properly entered in 4-H)

1. The purpose of this class is to promote cow and calf production in Logan
County.
2. Both cow and calf must be halter broke and exhibited at the same time.
3. The class is to be judged on the quality of the cow and calf and the efficiency of
the cow in producing the calf.
4. The cow and calf animals can only be shown in the Beef Production class and
no other.
5. The DAM is to be a purebred or crossbred female that is registered in an
approved Beef Herdbook which shows her to be registered in the exhibitor’s
name only.
6. ALL livestock must have a health certificate that meets all health requirements
of the state.
7. The calf is to be owned, exhibited and maintained by the exhibitor the same as
the cow.
8. Calf is to be born on or after January 1, 2011.
9. At Superintendent’s discretion, cow-calves may leave in the evening, Thursday,
August 5.

MONETARY AWARDS
LOGAN COUNTY SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION – The association will award the following monies for all
Simmental Heifer Classes at the 4-H Show.
1st - $5, 2nd - $3, and 3rd - $2. Monetary awards will also be awarded to the Champion and Reserve
Champion Simmental Steer. Contributions of the Breeders Association for the 4-H Show at the Logan
County Fair will include: Boyer Simmentals, Breezeway Simmentals, Donnan Family Simmentals, Graff
Land & Livestock, Hilltop Farms, Hoerbert Family Simmentals, 5K Simmentals, Jones Family Simmentals,
Maxheimer Farms Simmentals, and Wolf Creek Simmentals.
HEREFORD AWARDS – Cash awards of $5, 4, 3, and 1 will be given to the top four places in both Hereford
steer and heifer classes. $10 will also be awarded for the Champion Hereford Steer and $10 for the
Champion Hereford Heifer, $5 for the Reserve Champion Steer and $5 Reserve Champion Heifer.
Contributors to the Hereford Fund for 4-H and Jr. Shows at the Logan County Fair will include: William
Burris, Rick McKown, Randy Pech, Marc Short, Tom Young and Jerry Entwistle.
LOGAN COUNTY ANGUS ASSOCIATION – The Angus Association will pay $5 for 1st, $3 for 2nd, and $2 for
3rd place for all Angus classes in both heifer and steer classes at the Logan County 4-H Show.

All breeds will show in their respective classes regardless of number in the class.

A Grand Champion and Reserve will be named. Commercial ewes will not show
for Champion.
4.
All entries in the breeding classes must be purebred. Registration papers will be
called for during the Fair.
5.
4-H members can exhibit two breeds of sheep in the 4-H Show with a maximum of
12 entries in the breeding classes. Wethers are limited to two entries of any
breeds or crosses. Commercial will count as a breed.
6.
Each exhibitor will be limited to two entries in each class per breed except the pair
of lambs where only one pair may be shown.
7.

show no evidence of permanent teeth.

Breeding sheep (including ewe and ram lambs) must have been owned by the
fourth Monday in June of the current year. Wethers must have been owned by
May 15 of the current year. Spot checks of farms by Extension staff and
Superintendent may be performed to verify possession.

Health and registration papers will be checked on Tuesday, August 4 in the Show
Pavilion from 2-3:30 p.m. All ear tags, tattoos, or horn markings must be visible for
ring clerks to read. (see sheep health regulations in white pages at back of
showbook)
10. Artificial coloring will not be allowed. Any animal being artificially colored will be
disqualified.

Market wethers will be weighed on Tuesday, August 2 from 1:15 -1:30 p.m. in hog

All animals exhibited in the 4-H breeding hog classes will be purebred &/or
crossbred, and must have been farrowed on or after January 1 of the current year.

Each exhibitor may show a maximum of four gilts, maximum of two gilts per class.
4.
Single purebred and commercial gilts must have been owned by June 1, 2011.
5.
All breeds will show in their respective classes regardless of the number in the
class.

Registration papers required on all purebreds. Papers must be with exhibitor in
ring. Top two in each class may be checked in ring.

since June 1, 2011.
10. Ear notch sheets are due June 1st in the Extension Office, if the sheets are not
received by June 1st, the exhibitor will not be eligible to show. June 1st all possible
ear notches are due. Fresh ear notches will be disqualified. County Fair
Veterinarian and the Livestock Committee will make final decision.

Commercial gilts will be placed in classes and will be shown by weight.
12.
Grand Champion will be chosen from breed winners and Champion Crossbred.
Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from remaining class with the reserve in
class to the Grand Champion brought in. A Champion and Reserve Champion
Purebred will be selected, if not selected in Grand Champion Drive.
13.
Swine registration papers for Purebred Gilts must be in hand upon entering
showring. Committee will be working one class ahead to check papers.
Registration papers must be original and in 4-H’ers name ONLY. NO FAXES
WILL BE ACCEPTED. Joint ownership will NOT be accepted.

MARKET HOG SHOW - BARROWS

Barrows only are eligible for the 4-H barrow classes. Each exhibitor will be required
to produce registration papers on animals shown in registered classes.

All barrows must have been owned by June 1, 2011.
4.
All breeds will show in their respective classes regardless of the number in the
class.
5.
Each exhibitor will be limited to six barrows weighed and six barrows shown, but a
maximum of 4 barrows per breed (crossbred counts as a breed).
6.
All barrows will be weighed Tuesday, August 3 between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m.
Purebred barrows will be divided into three weight classes by superintendent and
weighmaster after “weigh-in” is completed
7.
Reweigh procedures are as follows: 1. The request to reweigh must be made
immediately as the animal leaves the scale. 2. Barrow must not leave the scale
area. 3. Barrow must reweigh within 15 minutes of original weigh time. 4. The
second weight will be official weight. Each exhibitor may weigh six(6) barrows at
“official weigh-in”, with a four per breed maximum. Weight requirements will be
strictly enforced.
8.
Grade or crossbred barrows will be considered as a breed and be subject to all
rules above.
9.
Each entrant must submit to the county Extension office, ear notches for all
barrows, certifying that these barrows are owned by the exhibitor, have been a 4-H
project since June 1, 2011, and were farrowed on or after January 15, 2011. If ear
notches are not received in the office by June 1st, the exhibitor will not be eligible to
show. June 1st all possible ear notches are due.
10. All barrows must be owned as BARROWS by exhibitor by June 1, 2011.
11. Health papers will be checked in Show Pavilion on Tuesday, August 2, from 2-3:30
