4-H Project Activities and
Exhibit Requirements
Project: Microwave Magic B – Micro Magicians
Suggested for: Intermediate Level
Latest Starting Date: May 1
Recommended Project Activities:
• Learn about microwave power and watts.
• Plan and prepare foods, including vegetables, cakes and casseroles.
• Learn good food safety practices.
• Give a talk or demonstration related to the project.
Project Exhibit Requirements:
Exhibitors have the following options: Food Product or Food & Nutrition Demonstration. BOTH
OF THE OPTIONS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR STATE FAIR -- 4-H member must be 10 years of age
by September 1 of the current 4-H year to exhibit at the State Fair.
FOOD PRODUCT
Prepare an exhibit of 3 apple brownies using the recipe in the project manual.
Include a menu for one meal using the food item. Apple brownies should be displayed
on a disposable plate placed in a self-sealing plastic bag.
Exhibitors age 10 and older must fill out a 1 page 4-H Exhibit Report to
include with their exhibit. The 4-H Exhibit Report can be found on our
county website at

the printable forms section. If you do not have internet access you can
contact your 4-H leader, or call the Extension Office to receive a copy of the
report form.
OR
COUNTY FOODS DEMONSTRATION CONTEST
Foods demonstrations should be approximately 8-10 minutes in length, however there
will not be a time penalty. The time limit will be taken into consideration at
the judge’s discretion. The food demonstration must relate to the project area in which
the member is enrolled. Demonstrations may be done by an individual or team of two
members. Refer to the Illinois 4-H Foods Demonstration Guide found on the
Illinois 4-H web site under Members: 4-H Projects: Healthy Living; Foods
and Nutrition.
Exhibitors are responsible for furnishing all equipment and supplies. No commercial
names should be visible on products used. A stove, refrigerator, and demonstration
table will be available for demonstrator's use. (A microwave is not available.) No
parents or supervising adults will be permitted in the actual demonstration space. Each
exhibitor is responsible for setting up his/her own demonstration area. It is the 4-H
member’s responsibility to check the newsletter and sign up for the Foods Demonstration
Contest.
