Sangamon-Menard Extension Unit 4-H Project Activities and Exhibit Requirements Project: Soybeans Suggested Ages: Division I - No Experience Division II - Some Experience Division III - Experienced Division IV - More Experienced Latest Starting Date: April 1 Recommended Project Activities: Division I - Do three or more of the following exercises from the project manual: • Explore the uses of soybeans. • Learn the parts of the soybean plant. • Plan a visit to a grain elevator. • Study the growth of soybean plants. • Make a weed control poster. • Others as listed in the manual. Division II - Do three or more of the following exercises from the project manual: • Examine the differences in seed quality. • Compare planting depths. • Take a soil sample. • Visit a seed testing laboratory. • Compare combines used to harvest soybeans. • Learn about careers related to crops. • Others as listed in the manual. Division III - Do three or more of the following exercises from the project manual: • Visit a local livestock feed store to find out how soybeans are used for feeds. • Germinate seeds under varying light conditions. • Study the effects of row spacing. • Calculate seeding rates. • Compare seeding methods and planters. • Learn to recognize soybean plant diseases. • Others as listed in the manual. (over) Division IV - Do three or more of the following exercises from the project manual: • Determine harvest losses. • Scout for insects. • Learn about maintaining soybean quality. • Keep a soybean balance sheet. • Watch soybean prices. • Experiment with planting dates. • Others as listed in the manual Project Exhibit Requirements: Exhibitors have two options, BOTH OF WHICH ARE ELIGIBLE FOR STATE FAIR. 4-H member must be 10 years of age by September 1 of the current 4-H year to exhibit at the State Fair. Exhibit one of the following options: Exhibitors age 10 and older must fill out a 1 page 4-H Exhibit Report to include with their exhibit. The 4-H Exhibit Report can be found on our county website at http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/sangamonmenard/4hyouth1157.html under the printable forms section. If you do not have internet access you can contact your 4-H leader, or call the Extension Office to receive a copy of the report form. Exhibit five fresh plants, (include root system that is washed and free of soil) that are representative of member’s 4-H project field. Crops exhibited must have been grown and cared for by the exhibitor as part of their current 4-H crops project. OR Exhibit an experimental or educational project exhibit related to one experience from your project. Include explanation of the project in a report for public understanding. Table-top displays should be limited to 2’ wide and 15” deep and maximum poster size is 22” x 30”. REVISED 1/2010
