County Director Greeting
U of I PSEP Dates
Happy Holidays! 2009 has been a challenging
year for everyone. As a few fields with corn still
dot the countryside, some have been fortunate
enough to at least get a portion of their fall
tillage completed. Regardless of where you are
at in the process personally, most will have at
least a little extra preparation on their plate in
the spring.
To purchase and apply restricted use pesticides,
you must have a current private pesticide
applicators license.
Plus, new ideas and products are barraging the
market. If you haven’t already heard of Biochar,
it will likely become a familiar term as its use in
enhancing soil productivity is evaluated. Biochar
is about what you think it might be. It is charred,
but not totally burned, biomass somewhat
similar to charcoal. But instead of using it for
grilling steaks, Biochar enhances microbial
activity, enhances the availability of nutrients for
crop uptake, reduces the emission of
concentrated greenhouse gasses, and helps retain
carbon in the soil instead of releasing it into the
atmosphere as carbon dioxide. New herbicide
chemistries and pre-mixes have been introduced
to help develop weed management programs
that will not be as reliant on glyphosate relieving
many concerns of glyphosate resistance due to
its perennial use on corn and soybeans.
As always, there are a variety of reports and
tools available on farmdoc
(www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu) to help you wade
through the countless decisions to be made
before spring planting. If you have a specific
question, but do not have access to the online
version, please contact our office at 285-5543.
I wish you the best of success in the 2010!
Jennifer Mowen
Pike County Extension Director
To obtain and maintain your Private Pesticide
Applicator’s License you must pass a fifty
question exam administered by the Illinois
Department of Agriculture. Again this year there
will be a $30 fee for those who participate in the
training portion of these workshops. This fee
will be in addition to the $20 licensing fee
required by the Department of Agriculture. The
license is good for three years.
Those who prefer to study for the exam on their
own at home can purchase Extension’s Private
Applicators Study Guide and Workbook for $13.
In lieu of the $30 training fee, tests may be taken
at the end of the training session. Please contact
the office of the location you will be attending
for any information on testing procedures. For
more information or additional dates, contact the
Pike County office at 217-285-5543.

by a pre-breeding exam that includes
reproductive tract palpation and pelvic
measurements. During the breeding period
heifers must be mated to a heifer bull as
determined by maximum birth weight and/or
calving ease EPDs.
Producers interested in participating in the
Heifer Development Program should contact
Teresa Steckler at the Mt. Vernon Extension
Center (618) 242-9310.
Students will learn to properly maintain
equipment, as well as to shear. Youth and adults
