ICEE 3100: Internship in Engineering Required Texts: As needed Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students shall be able to demonstrate knowledge of the engineering workplace and describe critical factors related to a project or the organization. Organization purpose. Organizational structure. Project or work assignment purpose. Measures of success both personal and technical. Personnel policies of organization Methods used to communicate with employees and maintain morale. Service-learning projects develop an understanding of the role of engineering in social projects. Course Outline: Industry Based Supervised Internships Internships with local, regional, national employers are an academic learning experience in which students gain practical experience in applying theory. Service-learning Projects Service-learning is an academic learning experience in which students provide community service and reflect on their service experience and connect it with their academic subject matter. Students have an opportunity to make contributions to their community and neighborhoods and develop a deeper understanding of their academic course materials. The student will: Define internship goals with supervisor Achieve these goals through work guided by supervisor or mentor Research and analyze attributes of the internship organization Provide logs and reports describing the progression of the internship Develop final notebook that will describe goals, duties, and thoughts Present summary report and evaluation of internship experience Grading Policy and Assignments: Students will be evaluated based on the combination of activities including assignments and a final notebook that will include reports (signed by supervisor) and a summarization of the internship experience: 1. 2. 3. Internship Log: Students maintain a reflective internship log. Internship logs will be due monthly and can be emailed to the professor. Original with supervisor signature must be in the final report. Analytical Assignments: Students are expected to explore and analyze specific areas of the organizational operation of the employer. These assignments are due over the course of the semester in a specified sequence with the Internship logs. Final report and Supervisor Evaluation: At the completion of the internship, the student submits a summary report including the work log, samples of the engineering work performed, the analytical assignments, and the evaluation of the supervisor Grades will be assigned based on completion of work experience, log, and final report.
