How to calculate your GPA
If you’re unsure about what your GPA will look like at the end of the semester you can try calculating
your GPA based on the grades you anticipate earning this semester. Having an idea about what
your GPA might be could be helpful in thinking about your classes for next semester and how many
credits to take. To do this you will need: a list of your courses; how many credit hours each course
is worth; the letter grade you anticipate earning; and a calculator.
Step 1: Next to each course you are taking, list how many credit hours it is worth and what grade
you anticipate earning
Ex. Biology 104
4 credits
B+
Step 2: Use this chart to figure out how many grade points each letter grade is worth
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D = 1.0
F=0
Step 3: Next to each class and anticipated grade, write the appropriate grade point value.
Ex. Biology 104
4 credits
B+
3.3
Step 4: Multiply the credit hour for each class by the expected grade point value. This total will
represent your quality points for that class.
Ex. Biology 104
4 credits
B+
3.3
4 x 3.3 = 13.2 quality points
Step 5: Add all of your quality points
Step 6: Add your total number of credit hours for the semester.
Step 7: Divide your total number of quality points by your total credit hours. The resulting number is
your semester GPA
Ex. Total Semester Quality Points = 45.3
Total Semester Credit Hours = 17
Semester GPA = 45.3/17 = 2.66 GPA
