Using the NYDEC Website to Find Permitted Wells
1. Go to the NYDEC oil and gas searchable database:
www.dec.ny.gov/cfmx/extapps/GasOil/Search/wells/index.cfm
2. In order to narrow down your search to unconventional gas wells, limit your
search to those wells permitted after 2005 as shown below and click “AND”.
3. Enter in your county and click “Submit”.
4. Download the data as an Excel file for ease of use.
5. Look at the column “well type”, the only permits of concern are listed as “Gas
Wildcat”, “GasDevelopment” and “Gas Extension” otherwise you will be looking
wells that aren’t natural gas. This can be easily sorted using the data in the Excel
format.
6. Look at the column “objective formation”, the only permits of concern are those
in the Marcellus, Utica, Genesee and Lorraine shale. Eliminate all others from
your permit search.
7. Scroll over to see the columns with the surface Lat/Long values. In order to map
our your wells. go to https://maps.google.com/ and enter the coordinates to see
the location of the permit in relation to landmarks.
