Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm In Attendance: Daniel Campos John Soliman Robert Crossley Eugene Hernandez Unknown President Vice President Advisor Guest Guest Mr. Crossley: Alright Daniel Campos: So we….What are doing? John Soliman: Start over Mr. Crossley: Just start over…..just start over John Soliman: But, not the time, the time is right here….4:34pm Daniel Campos: We are meeting today, Thursday, July 21 of 2011. Call of order happened at 4:34pm. We realize that we do not meet quorum today. (John interceded: “You want to take role Mr. Chair?) Daniel Campos: Yes I would like to take role. Starting with President, Daniel Campos: here And Vice President: Present. And we have the Treasurer, which by all means is absent. John Soliman: What time is it chair? Daniel Campos: It’s 4:37pm, and I believe we don’t meet quorum so we will have to call this meeting unofficial, a unofficial meeting and all the items will be postponed. We will have only a planning meeting for now, since we don’t meet quorum. Should we follow procedures still, Mr. Advisor? Mr. Crossley: You could follow the agenda to discuss items, but you can’t vote on anything. So it could actually, you could probably discuss some things and then when you have your regular meeting it’ll just make it a lot more easy, because you’ve already discussed it but then you can kind of move forward. Daniel Campos: ok, so what we gonna do is, we actually gonna postpone all the items and gonna actually put the agenda aside as gonna discuss as a planning meeting. You know we have guests today and we gonna listen. We gonna give him 5 minutes to express what he needs to say. We gotta touch on a couple of items, if everyone agrees with this. Yes, Mr. Vice President, John Soliman. John Soliman: I, Vice President, John Soliman, would like to state to the council….I do need to leave in 30 minutes. I do have a family affair that I have to go… Daniel Campos: Ok John Soliman: But I would be willing to take minutes, if you would like Mr. Chair. Daniel Campos: Absolutely, thank you John Soliman: So this meeting is unofficial. So when is gonna be official the next meeting Daniel Campos: Today is Thursday, so it will be postpones until next Thursday. Cause we don’t have a agenda for next Monday Meeting Minutes 7/21/2011 Page 1 Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm Mr. Crossley: Correct Daniel Campos: And it should be posted today..the agenda John Soliman: Meeting Again? Daniel Campos: Thursday John Soliman: Thursday? Mr. Crossley: Date? Unknown: The 28th Daniel Campos: That will be the 28th. Do we. We should meet at 4:30 which we should understand that is the time that also accommodate the Treasurer since last time he was under lunch break and he had to leave suddenly the meeting, so what we gonna do. We gonna give him at 4:30 which is the time when he is off work, so then we will have more time, so this is for Thursday, so we can rearrange and reschedule timing for future meetings….yes Mr. Advisor, Robert Crossley. Mr. Crossley: Just a suggestion, but being, that the council has already designated Monday at 2 o’clock to have a meeting. Can the council still continue their planning meeting. So whatever the council got finished today based on time…we can continue on Monday at 2 o’clock Daniel Campos: ok (Mr. Crossley: if the schedule permits) Daniel Campos: That’s actually a good idea. Monday at 2. We gonna have a planning meeting and by then the agenda should be originated already for Thursday Mr. Crossley: The Plan is to do a official agenda on Monday, ok Daniel Campos: ok, yes, Mr. Vice President, John Soliman John Soliman: I, Vice President, John Soliman. I would like to direct this question to the advisor. Do I need (Daniel Campos intercedes: Please direct questions, I’m sorry please direct the questions to the chair and the chair will actually direct questions. Do not direct questions to anyone). John Soliman: I was asking for advice. It was not a rebuttal or anything(Daniel Campos intercedes: Oh, ok) I was not directing anything Daniel Campos: OK John Soliman: Point of clarification, Do we need to be typed the minutes for a unofficial meeting? Daniel Campos: for planning meeting? Mr. Crossley: I would suggest, that it would be typed John Soliman: ok Mr. Crossley: They don’t need to be approved John Soliman: Meeting Minutes 7/21/2011 Page 2 Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm Mr. Crossley: No, because it’s just a planning meeting. I think they need to be given to the council along with the official minutes just so they coincide with one another….. Group: ok Inaudible…….. (official meeting Monday ….Thursday) Daniel Campos: Ok, we gonna give 5 minutes to Eguene Hernandez (Hernandez), who’s our guest, we gonna give him the open forum with time ,but it’s not a official meeting You got 5 minutes Eugene Hernandez: ok, Thank you very much, I want to bring up 3 announcements, One is: if anyone wants to attend the Global Warming Conference, which is gonna be at (in) Culver City with free lunch and breakfast will be provided and they’ll be talking about the effects of global warming and it’s free if anyone who wants to attend Mr. Crossley: this is Saturday Eugene Hernandez: this is Saturday, Mr. Crossley: the 23rd? Eugene Hernandez: Yeah, this Saturday. It’s from 9 to 6 and its at the Peace Center in Culver City on Sepulveda Blvd (inaudible) and I’ll pass it along if you want to ride down and attend. The second is another issue that directly impacts the college that’s gonna be proposed. Is that they want to build a strip mine right up here on Galvina and Harding that goes up to the new housing projects. You know, they’re gonna mine for reconstituted granite. They wanna move 1.8 million tons of earth. They gonna have 42 trucks a day going in and out..you know how narrow Maclay thing is, so in addition to the construction in the college this is a proposal nightmare because environmentally it could affect us as far as flooding, the machinery could cause fires, there could be noise and air pollution and it’s right next to the homes there. And it’s something that’s a county issues, but I think that we should be prepared about it and I’ll probably take a stand against it because you know here have you ever seen a picture of the strip mining up Kentucky and Appalachia, they just leave a giant hole in the hill and they don’t replant it or nothing. If you open it up to one mining company it’s gonna be open again..here’s a graphic map of the place where it’s gonna be. And the third thing I wanted to ask the ASO is that I’m on the community advisory board outreach committee of KPFK. KPFK is the only non-profit radio station in Los Angeles and I think throughout California it’s 90.7 on the dial and it presents news, information, cultural information, music and they are required to have 2 town hall meetings to get input from the community and they’ve never had one here in the San Fernando Valley, it’s always been in LA so they asked me if perhaps with the co-sponsorship of ASO we could have this town hall meeting sometime in the fall to get the campus center so that the students could come express their opinion they have shows of youth, you know on African American and Chicanos, etc and you know it’ll be a good forum for ASO to be on one of those shows here to talk about the cut-backs in education and rising tuition fees and everyone who’s gonna transfer and those rising fees at the UC’s and state colleges tremendously so that’s what I’m asking for and do you have any questions?....Yes Mr. Crossley: Real Quick, so a town hall meeting and the purpose is again for (Eugene Hernandez intercedes: the purpose is their mandated by their listeners for to have a meeting to listen to the community Meeting Minutes 7/21/2011 Page 3 Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm what suggestions you have about changing programming which programs you would like to see on KPFK. What, How do we get involved in this radio station because it’s the only corporate non-sponsored radio station in the United States, I think. It’s 100,00 watts, which is large for most radio stations have 55,000 so it reaches from the Canada border all the way to Mexico, so you could ask for a program devoted to students to talk about the cut-backs or be it guests or be it the Advisory Board, etc.) Daniel Campos: What is the radio Station again? Eugene Hernandez: 90.7 FM Daniel Campos: 19 or 90? Mr. Crossley: 90 yeah 9 0.7 and its talk radio, yeah Eugene Hernandez: yeah, but not just talk radio…they have ????: Do you have a date in mind 24 hours philosophy Daniel Campos: When you the fall…where or when, do you have a specific date in mind? Eugene Hernandez: No I don’t have a date in mind Daniel Campos: it would be nice when we can actually arrange this, when we actually have a council, so we can have the whole board involved. I think it’s a great idea. I think it’s a great idea to have to unify the students. I’m gonna. My point of view is, it can not be a one man effort. If we gonna do this. We have do it together and we don’t want you to carry the whole load. The amount of work… we would like to ummm. Give responsibility to different groups, to get the involvement of some of the clubs that actually might have…because I know like for instance in this radio station as far as I understand, they talk about a lot of Chicano issues so maybe we can get for instance Lasoinchi we can also get Mecha, we can get AB540 to have representation but I also have part of a committee to organize this in a way that it is successful and we don’t have only 10 people over there and also we have to think on the promotion. So and advertisement in order to make it big. I think that if, when we get the council together we gonna be planning what the events for every single month. We gonna have a big event every month. I think that event every month could be actually the town hall meeting could be included on that day. So for instance we have club days with the club day we have also some of the vendors coming in and promoting their products and then right after that everyone’s gonna get something to come to this town hall meeting. So we already have the mass people involved and it’s easy to drag them inside with the town hall meeting than to have a town hall meeting when nobody knows what’s going on. So we can plan a date. Eugene Hernandez: I’ll get back to you with a date, then I will come back to the meeting and give you the specific date Daniel Campos: Already, well since this is only a planning meeting, thank you Eugene by the way. I would like to address a couple things that are important for planning today, it was brought to my attention that people who were somehow recruiting personnel for Magic Mountain they were on campus they were trying to post flyers and what they were trying to post as flyers apparently addressed the information booth. And that information booth which happens to be our Treasurer. Said that they can just post it on campus just without the stamp, somehow it was noticed by a faculty member or who was a student. I don’t know..I’m not really sure about that….the thing is that finally. This person was directed to the students Meeting Minutes 7/21/2011 Page 4 Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm affairs office where the sign was actually stamped and proper post on one of the boards. I think as ASO members, we should know better. I mean this is part of our duties. None of the things can go on the wall if they are not approved stamped. We cannot promote people to come and to stamps cause if we cannot do it then we should be vigilant of these kind of issues and being a ASO member you know also has a responsibility of making sure that this type of policies are respected for campus for the respect of our professors and faculty members. And just the bottom line…the policies of school. You know we all being hold to the thing, but on the other hand the policy the positive side of this thing is that is a good example of how can this new council and ASO can actually utilize people who are coming to recruit, people who coming to the college in order to turn that into a business relationship. So that person was actually here to recruit should have been referred to today’s meeting coming at open forum so we can not only give them space for one little flyer maybe we could give him mass advertisement and we can find a solution and also a mutual benefit. Of providing some of the students, you know work study what and tell to these type of companies that I learned today in the foundation meeting that a company who decides to partner with a college, you know when it comes to work-study and for a part-time, less than 25 hours a week. Financial aid will pay 75% salary of the student and 25% will actually paid for the employer, which is a great opportunity how to partnership with businesses around you know, so if we could actually get that out there and you know again this opportunity was unfortunately you know gone, but honestly it’s a bad thing because you know what is not meant to be, is not meant to be right now. What is important is that we see everyone around here is vigilant of this business opportunity in order to increase a revenue for ASO in order so we can help the students, not only in college, but to also to promote awareness in our college like the one Eugene presented in order to get participation of the students, so those things the need to be addressed a proper way so let’s try to get these things to the right channels and again if there is a procedure of how ASO needs to function through our advisor to ASO in order to reach the next level. We also need all of us to take to take our campus to advertisement should be directed to student affairs, but before nothing let’s bring it to the students to listen to what the students can take advantage of this things so we can actually state that next time we need to be on track that we need to attract forms of money. You know all different kinds of revenues. Um last, but not least you know there a lot of things that I talked about in these meeting today that I attended today, but I would like to report this agenda is actually official. Is there anything else that anyone wants to add to today? Yes, Mr. Vice President, Mr. John Soliman. John Soliman: I, John Soliman, Vice President, I would like to know if the next meeting will be a planning meeting on Monday and the date, do you guys have a date (Daniel Campos intercedes: The date will be ) the 25th? (Daniel Campos: yes) and the official one will be on Thursday, the 28th and I would like to remind council that the due date for the applications are the 28th. That was agreed upon in our first meeting. Daniel Campos: The what? John Soliman: The due date for the applications Daniel Campos: Was when John Soliman: The 28th Daniel Campos: Oh yes, this is the last business day of the month, correct? John Soliman: Yes Mr. Crossley: The 28th is a Friday, correct? John Soliman: No, it’s a Thursday Several voices speak at once Meeting Minutes 7/21/2011 Page 5 Los Angeles Mission College Associated Student Organization (ASO) Meeting Minutes Thursday, July 21, 2011, 4:30pm Mr. Crossley: so next Thursday, ok John Soliman: our next meeting Mr. Crossley: I just have a question, Have you received any applications? Daniel Campos: Yes, I think ummm Mr. Crossley: You want to give them to me so I can review them? Daniel Campos: Yeah, I actually wasn’t here but I was calling, so let me find out Mr. Crossley: So give Daniel Campos: they call me…..do you bring the application? Unknown: We actually…I did bring you one Daniel Campos: ok, because I heard that ummm, let me check on this…I get right back to you because I think those application were dropped over at Calworks because there was nobody here when they came so (John Soliman intercedes: I think you were gonna check them when you come back from (Mr. Crossley intercedes: I’m just saying do you have any applications?) Daniel Campos: Not on me Mr. Crossley: so nobody turned in applications Daniel Campos: no not on the ,,,ummm yesterday on the..day before..I do have some applications for those people who was actually submitted by email back then, but you know there were electronically. I can print them up if want me to and I can hand them to you Mr. Crossley: yeah, give me what you have and I could review those and get them back to you so you can at least start working on those Daniel Campos: ok, sound good ok Mr. Crossley: ok Daniel Campos: I’ll do that Mr. Crossley: and um not as a report, but as a FYI email blasts went out and students have been calling back and responding so that went well, supplies have been ordered, we should be getting them soon. Because the way that they worked, I had to go through the business office, the president had to sign it and then went to Office Depot so I got a pdf file that it was sent (inaudible) by Monday and ummm, I’m waiting for the data jobs to be facilities to do the data jobs for the computers that we’re suppose to get, so I’m anticipating on Monday. Daniel Campos: Okay, I think that’s pretty much it and ummm. I think we can adjourn this unofficial planning meeting at 4:57pm, July 21, 2011. Thank you gentlemen for your presence.
