Pick an article from the textbook with a topic that you find interesting and would like to
know more about. DO NOT USE THE SAME SUBJECT MATTER/ARTICLE YOU
USED IN PAPER #1.

Identify the author’s thesis and supporting arguments.
IV.
Investigate the author’s premise through research and come up with a thesis of your own
that: (pick one of the following three choices)
a) continues the author’s argument,
b) OR argues against the author’s argument,
c) OR adds a whole new angle on the subject matter that your author addresses in
his/her thesis.
V.
You will need to use 2 – 3 sources in addition to the author’s article (no more than 4
sources for this paper).
VI.
The author’s article and thesis (or at least some aspect of the author’s supporting
argument) MUST be included in your thesis.
VII.
FOR NEXT CLASS: Bring three copies (one you will hand in to me) of your thesis,
your outline, and a list of your sources for research. This list should have several sources
– you will end up using only 2 or 3, but you need to have looked at more than that in
order to narrow it down to only two or three. Be prepared to discuss your plan for your
paper in front of the class (Is your thesis sound? Do your sources support your thesis?
Etc.)
