AtD Update: (Luis)
Report on District Student Success Initiative monthly meeting: Representatives from all
campuses in LACCD were present to share the ideas and activities they are working on, so
many of which are not shared with the rest of the District often enough. LB City College and
CSLB have created college career paths beginning in elementary school with 8th grade
scholarships to LBCC and then onto CSLB.
The question of whether or not LAMC will continue with AtD arose. LACCD is such a large
district that perhaps our colleges could work together without paying for AtD (currently
$10,000 per school). However, it was noted that the AtD visiting coaches provide an outside
perspective and their required reporting maintains accountability.
Open Education Resource (OER) is a new UCLA and LACCD partnership to create online
modules with a focus on English and Math preparation. A pilot is expected by April 2014.
OER is soliciting Collaborative Innovation Team volunteers to work on this project. Feedback
from the Math Department notes that no community college faculty were involved since it
seems the level is not geared to community college students. Another concern was that
$300,000 is allocated to this project but there are no stipends for the faculty teams.
The AtD District Summit will be held at LAMC on May 30, 2014.
Report on First (Annual) Spring into Spring Prof. Dev. Day: The day was very successful, with 98
participants attending and six workshops offered. Feedback from faculty was very positive about
the workshops and the luncheon presentations on the Campus Book and Library/Learning Center
resources.
New Business
Requests for funding are ongoing and can be submitted on the Friday before ESC meetings.
$8,357 is available and the question arose whether it can be rolled over or if it must be
spent by the end of year.
Possible requests: paying faculty to grade ESL writing sample assessments. A discussion
of the feasibility and effectiveness of writing assessments and the need to collect
meaningful data followed.
Professional Learning Hub (Marie): Title V provided funding for a Faculty Tech Hub in LRC
208. The room has four computers for faculty and a SmartBoard. Title V will provide
training on the SmartBoard and current software used on campus.
Performance Based Funding – may be in effect in Summer 2014: concentration on
Orientation, Assessment, and Ed Plan with data collection of those who have completed
all three.
Fall Kickoff: over 300 students served. The Fall Kickoff will be an annual event.
