By: Yesika Diaz, Veronica Gonzalez, Courtney Davis, Margarita Villa, Nancy Avalos, Oralia Gonzalez NUMBERS AND OPERATIONS: CLASSIFYING AND SORTING CLASSIFYING AND SORTING Grouping objects by a common characteristic, such as size, shape, and color. LEARNING GOALS Students will be able to recognize different types of categories, such as colors, shapes, size, or similar properties and attributes. Students will be able to explain and justify why certain objects belong with a chosen category. SHAPES Materials: Song about shapes, Shape book, Shape blocks. Introduction: Teacher will read “Shape” book. Procedure: • • • The teacher will name each shape and show a picture of the shape while having the students name the shapes aloud. Teacher will pass out shape blocks to the students The students will sort the blocks by shape. End: The teacher along with the students will sing a shape song as well as asking open ended questions long the way. GROUPING ROCKS Materials: Different sizes of rocks, sheet of paper with categories such as small, medium and large. Procedures: The children will sort the rocks on the paper according to the correct size. After the children can discuss what differences they found. SORTING WITH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Materials : Variety of fruit and vegetables, large bowl and Plates Procedures: Mix the fruit and vegetables in the bowl. Have children separate them into two categories (fruit and vegetables) on the plate. SORTING BY COLOR Materials: Color bears, Color cups Procedure: Children will receive a handful of colorful bears. Children will separate the bears by color (blue, green, red, purple and yellow) End: Ask the children what colors did they learn and ask what they where doing. MODIFICATIONS Teacher will place children in small groups based on their learning style and capabilities. If the children have trouble separating the objects the teacher could assist them. If possible teacher may translate in home language. ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING What color are the bears ? How many Bears do you have ? What shapes do you see? How many sides does the shape have? Which rock is heavier ? What sizes are the rocks? What are some different ways to separate the vegetables and fruits? How many fruits/vegetable do you see? FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY 1. 2. The children will put different types of rocks in a tub with water to see which rock will either float or sink. Apple letter sorting. The children will separate the lower case letters from the uppercase letters. WHAT EACH MEMBER DID: Yesika worked on the shape activity and typed part of the power point. Nancy worked on the rocks activity and follow up questions. Margarita worked on one of the follow up activities and helped with ideas. Oralia worked on the second follow up activity and helped with ideas. Courtney worked on the activity about sorting by colors with bears and helped with the ideas. Veronica worked on sorting fruits and vegetables having the children determine what is a fruit and what is a vegetable and helped with the ideas.
