Neither Real Americans nor Real Asians
Asians that have lived in the United States for over three generations have always had
trouble being accepted as An American because they don’t look the way an ideal American looks
like but are neither accepted as Asians when they go back to their country because there lifestyle
they weren’t considered Asians enough. When they were around non-Asian they would be
expected to be more like their ethnic group rather than American but we didn’t realize how
different they were from the people who were foreign born. Which is why they weren’t seen as
real Americans nor real Asians. The study that was conducted 95 third, fourth, and fifth
generations who were living in California. They were interviewed and ask how they identified
themselves and how their ethnic background affected the way people saw them or treated
differently.
So the study showed that many of the Asian Americans weren’t the typical American
because of the way they looked. When they are out they are treated differently and stand out
because of the way they look. Compared to a Caucasian they would be asked where they’re from
because they fit in as they typical American. This talks about how stereotypes would cause
problems for them. Being ethnic remains a social expectation for them despite how far removed
they are form their immigrant roots or how much they differ from their foreign-born
counterparts.
