Minutes approved without change. Unfinished Business: CMS Copy Machine: Jolie Scheib reported that Zoila Rodriguez-Doucette and Danny Villanova both agreed on the installation of a copy machine for students in the CMS for the Fall of 2014. No Smoking Signs Walter Bortman reported to Jolie that the no-smoking signs have been installed in the CMS building and the IA building. Smart Box in CSB 201 Jolie has been told that the smart boxes in CSB 210 are not working and they are in the process of being worked on. Meanwhile, classes in those rooms have been moved to other rooms where the smart boxes are working. Window Blinds in CSB and Instructional Buildings Facilities personnel have been observed measuring windows in classrooms in the CMS building and the CSB building, an indication that progress is being made on replacing the thin, translucent blinds with thicker ones. The Committee discussed the possibility that the new blinds might not be thick enough to effectively block the light, so a motion was made by Afri Walker: Motion: The Work Environment Committee recommends to the College Council that a sample of the new blinds be set up in one classroom, to be inspected by instructors, in order to ensure that the new blinds are effective, before installing them in all the classrooms of the College. The motion was seconded by Sherrie Loper and was passed. Bulletin Boards in CMS Par Mohammadian requested bulletin boards for posting notices in the CMS. New Business: ADA compliance issue: elevator in CCDS Janice Silver complains that the elevator in the Child Development building is not working. The 2nd floor classrooms are not wheel-chair accessible and Child Development instructors carrying large loads are hampered. The Committee wants to be sure that a work order was filed with Facilities before making a recommendation to the College Council. Room change request Martin Gilligan presented a request to move the office of Jesse Sanchez from CAI 216 to CAI 223, which has more space, commensurate with the working areas of other tenuretrack full-time instructors. The Committee voted to approve the request. CMS Mural project Richard Rains discussed the possibility of installing a series of wall murals in the hallway of CMS upper level, west wing. The murals would be science-related, as well as beautiful and inspiring. They would be created as an instructor-guided, art student activity. Issues such as on-going maintenance were also discussed. Richard and Deborah Paulsen of the Art Department have already been working with students on the project and have received a number of interesting proposals. Richard introduced a motion: Motion: The WEC Committee recommends that the College Council approve a preliminary study by Richard Rains (Physics and Astronomy) and Deborah Paulsen (Art). The study would concern the possibility of creating a wall mural on the upper level of the CMS building. The mural would use the beauty of art to portray the vastness and wonder of the Universe, as an inspiration for students walking the hallways. Richard moved to adjourn. Afri seconded. Adjourned at 3:21 pm Minutes respectfully submitted by R. Rains April 24, 2014
