Minutes of Technology Committee Meeting – 3-24-10 present: David Jordan, Maur Pearl, David Garza, Curtis Stage, Adrian Gonzalez, Roza Ekimyan, Martha Rios, Johnny Phung Absent: Joe Ramirez, Richard Rains, Hanh Tran, Saul Perez (ASO), Robert Payne, Kathy Dawson, Ramon Suarez 1. Moodle contract – 2010-2011– David presented the current quote for the 2010-2011 moodle contract. The cost is - $8705 – for LAMC – bill is due – we need more information on usage - college budgeted for etudes from last year – about $16,000 so net savings, even if we have to pay – swap out with etudes bill. This is first time we have had to pay for moodle. The District and other sister colleges paid for our usage. Maury said to contact VPAA and have her add it as a prioritized expense for Academic Affairs (after the fact). Bill also needs to go to Budget and Planning. It is less an issue in finding money since it was allocated to etudes. The money can be shifted over to cover the bill – it has to be a line item in the operations plan – we need to get idea of future bills. Also we need to send a copy of the bill to Karen – VP Admin Services. 2. 508 policy – Accommodations and Web Access Policies– The Committee reviewed LATTC policy on Accomodations see http://missionitac.pbworks.com/f/lattc-5090001.pdf . Adrian Gonzalez said that DSPS would review it and suggest changes. Maury feels the Trade Tech policy is too qualified, - what is mandate of the law? – what is a good faith effort? – It is not good enough to just state intention – also not “wherever financially feasible” – focusing on one population – veterans are not part of DSPS – should be focused on all students – We need to develop a process and guideline – We should check online for distillation of the process – get one or two page outline of the law – Technology Committee could provide links LAMC website was re-designed in last few years. We now use Omniupdate which is 508 compliant. Adrian said there is the Hi Tech center in Cupertino, and they provide software to check our 508 compliance at lamission.edu college websit. Nick in IT can install software and evaluate the website. Have Nick be responsible to check the website – Maury is reluctant to have Nick do this. Can software do a report. We will have Nick look at the software and report back Adrian will send information to the Technology Committee. The software program is called ACT Verify. Roza said that Adrian in DSPS will do a Faculty Success Center workshop on Weds. April 14th at 1 – 2 pm - CC#2 which will be announced in Mission News. We also need to look at our current web access policies and review them – see current policies at http://missionitac.pbworks.com/acceptableuse 3. MS Academy – IT academy – IT is working with Staff Development to log into a web-based portal and take training in MS Office products for classified and faculty to receive MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist Certification – see http://www.certification-crazy.net/mous.htm) which will include video tutorials – take quizzes, certification possible? The first stage is to provide the portal access and training. Curtis s said it is good for basic skills and it should also be rolled out to students, and student success and to include excel spreadsheets. 4. FTLA – report – only meeting once a month. May 26th is the commencement ceremony in WLA – Over summer the next FLTA at Southwest will be for faculty in math and science. Our FTLA faculty are currently using Facebook – check with Angela Echeverri – Academic Senate President. She is using it extensively in her science (Biology) classes. FTLA will do a presentation on what they have learned. It is suggested that they – next one at Southwest. faculty is using facebook – check with Angela – FTLA will do presentation to all of Faculty – suggest it be made in our next Flex Day 5. Weave Online – This is a program we can use for linking college master plans – It is very expensive $16 M per year. David suggested we set up our home grown system, with a “findings” evidence functionality to input validation. Maury said he is sitting down with Hanh and working on a system – an objective table, action plans, all captured in a data base. Hanh will take information from the tech plan and put it in that outline, there is tool – Ironspeed (see http://www.ironspeed.com/default.aspx) . It is a web application which takes a database and writes functional displays for use. We could then configure it to link our master plans. The software is $3000 and so reasonable. Curtis asked if it was linked to other master plans – eg. EPC and EMP what gets linked to each other – objective of TMP with EMP – related objectives – how do you report this out at the end of the day? And status of those items – how do you want to develop this linkage?. FTLA – Time Management workshop for student success went well. Next Month planned workshop for students – “What kind of learner are you” and on 3-25 “Finding Main Ideas in paragraphs” - posting it around campus we need to use calendar on campus – to get it on calendar – Mission News Next meeting – 4/14 at 12 noon 4. 5.
