East Carolina University Asian Faculty Interest Group Meetings
Sponsored by the Center for Faculty Excellence
Organized by Dr. Sylvie Henning (Director of International Programs for Harriot College
of Arts and Sciences) and Dr. Borim Song (Assistant Professor of Art Education, School
of Art and Design, College of Fine Arts and Communication)
Dear colleague,
Hope that everything is going well with you in the beginning of the new semester.
The Center for Faculty Excellence has launched the ECU Asian Faculty Interest Group
(FIG), which will provide monthly meetings for faculty members throughout the Fall
2009 semester. This faculty interest group is an outgrowth of last spring's session, "From
Asia to Greenville: Piecing Together Cultural Experiences," which included a roundtable
discussion by Asian faculty members on adapting to life in eastern North Carolina and at
ECU and an introduction to resources for international faculty. The meetings will take
place the third Friday of each month, aiming to provide an opportunity to share
experiences and learn about university and community resources. The first meeting will
be held on Friday, September 18 at 2pm at #1632 Old Cafeteria Complex.
To clarify ECU Asian Faculty Interest Group’s mission statement and goals/objectives
and to enhance the quality of the group’s practices through meetings, we would like to
invite you to participate in a brief survey. Our four open-ended questions for this survey
are:
1. As an Asian/Asian-American faculty member or a faculty who is interested in
Asia for your professional career, could you share what type of situations you are
facing?
2. What kind of information and resources do you want to gain from the Asian
Faculty Interest Group’s meetings?
3. What type of topics and issues do you want to discuss through the meetings?
4. Do you have any suggestion for the improvement of Asian/Asian-American
faculty members’ ECU experiences related to their teaching/service/research?
It will be greatly appreciated if you could answer the four questions and email back to
Borim Song at songb@ecu.edu by Sunday, September 13, 2009.
We greatly appreciate your wonderful support for and help with the formation and
development of ECU Asian Faculty Interest Group. We are looking forward to working
with you. Thank you very much for your time, energy, and passion.
Best regards,
Sylvie Hening and Borim Song
