1. Obtain information and forms for the internship
application. (This includes the Internship Application
and Agreement and any form from the hosting
institution.)
2. Discuss plans for the internship with the faculty
advisor.
3. Discuss plans for the internship with the organization
supervisor.
4. Complete papers and projects designated by the
organization supervisor and faculty advisor.
5. Compete the progress reports, final report and
evaluation.

Organization Employer Responsibilities:
1. Provide meaningful work assignments related to the
student’s field of study.
2. Meet with student frequently to discuss progress of
the internship.
3. Contact faculty advisor concerning any problems that
should arise.
4. Complete job description, necessary progress reports,
and final evaluation. Discuss these reports and
evaluation with the student, then submit the reports
and evaluation to the SLU American Studies faculty
advisor.

Faculty Advisor Responsibilities:
1. Assist student in completing Internship Application
and Agreement.
2. Set goals, dates, and evaluation methods for the
internship with the student.
3. Assess progress reports and meet with student during
the semester to assess progress and assign additional
requirements, papers, projects, etc.
4. Assign credits and final grade for the internship.
Internship Requirements
1. Student must be enrolled in St. Louis University
Department of American Studies for the amount of
credits to be awarded by the internship.
2. Student must meet all organization employer
qualifications.
3. Acceptance for an internship will be determined by the
faculty advisor, the American Studies department, and
the hosting institution employer.
4. An internship cannot be under the supervision of the
intern’s regular employment, or in a job in which the
intern has been or is currently employed, unless under
special circumstances.
5. An internship will not be arranged and/or credit
granted for previous work experience.
6. An internship will conform, as much as possible, to
university semesters.
7. An internship will require student participation for a
minimum of 50 hours for each credit, or 10 hours per
week.
8. The maximum internship credits applicable to a degree
shall be 3 credits.
9. Student will complete quarterly one-page progress
reports describing the work completed for the
internship to date and the educational components of
the work.
10. Students will complete a final internship report that
includes a description of the work completed for the
internship, how it fulfilled the internship’s educational
goals, and the role the intern played within the larger
project; an essay about the larger academic and
educational facets of the work and project and how it
furthered his/her academic studies. The student will
also attach copies (or a representative sampling) of any
work completed, such as catalog records, bibliographies,
exhibit materials, etc.
Other:
1. Internships may be paid or unpaid. This is a decision
of the organization hiring the intern.
2. All forms, logs, reports, and other items used in the
evaluation process become part of the student’s
permanent file in the department.
