Local Eco-Tourism Opportunities
Madison County, Illinois, is situated at the confluence of three major rivers: the Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri. The
diverse habitats of the rivers, floodplain, and bluffs surrounding them provide ample opportunities for recreation,
exploration, and learning about our natural environment. This presentation will provide a visual and oral introduction to
selected natural spaces, public lands, and environmental education facilities that are available in, and around, the
Madison County region for the public to visit and enjoy. Brief histories and information about the ecological importance
of the spaces will be offered. Awareness and education about unique, natural spaces in the area will provide the public
with requisite information that is necessary to locate and explore local natural habitats, expand the concept of
community, and foster stewardship for the protection and sustainability of natural resources in the region.
