Following are the requirements: Perform one or more prepared solos Perform major scales Perform Sight reading NOTE: All prospective students will be asked to sightread at the audition. Percussion (Please bring your own cymbals if auditioning for Jazz) Prospective majors who wish to make percussion instruments the principal area of applied music must audition for the Department of Music. Following are the requirements: Each candidate must perform creditably on snare and one additional category as follows: I. Snare Drum A. One solo or etude of moderate difficulty. B. Demonstrate control of the sustained roll at all dynamic levels. C. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level. II. Marimba, Xylophone, or Vibraphone A. One solo or etude of moderate difficulty. B. Major scales and arpeggios through four sharps and four flats and the chromatic scale performed from memory. C. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level. III. Timpani A. Perform a solo or etude of moderate difficulty. B. Demonstrate control of the sustained roll at all dynamic levels C. Demonstration of accurate tuning. 4 D. Sight reading at a moderately difficult level. IV. The candidate may perform a Multiple Percussion solo or etude in lieu of one of the above requirements. VOICE Perform two contrasting songs from memory: one in English and the other in a foreign language (e.g., French, German, or Italian). Prospective students will also complete a sight singing exercise as part of the audition. Transfer students should prepare four selections in a variety of musical styles and languages. MUSICAL THEATER Perform two selections from memory: one from standard musical theater repertoire and the other from standard classical vocal repertoire (e.g., Italian Art Song or similar). Prospective students will also complete a sight singing exercise as part of the audition. Transfer students should prepare four contrasting selections consisting of musical theater and standard classical vocal repertoire. Students auditioning for Musical Theater are also required to present one monologue from memory. INSTRUMENTAL/VOCAL JAZZ Required: Perform and improvise a blues (any key). Percussion, please bring your own cymbals. Optional: Perform and improvise on a (1) standard tune with chord changes (rhythm changes, "Autumn Leaves", etc.); (2) bossa nova (any Jobim, "Blue Bossa", etc.); (3) ballad. Bass, Piano and Guitar players should be prepared to demonstrate accompanying techniques (comping chord changes, walking bass lines, etc.). Drummers should be prepared to demonstrate the following rhythm feels: (l) swing, (2) latin-samba, (3) bossa nova, (4) ballad. Arpeggios-two octaves, major and minor, hands together THEORY/COMPOSITION Students who wish to major in Theory/Composition follow a two-step audition process. First, each candidate should contact Dr. Archer (karcher@siue.edu) to arrange a composition audition. This audition consists of submitting the scores for three completed works, with recordings or MIDI demos if available. Normally, this may be done via mail or e-mail. Second, each candidate should schedule an applied audition on his/her instrument or voice, as per the requirements above. Following that audition, there will be a brief, informal meeting with the Theory/Composition faculty to discuss the student's compositions and professional goals. 7
