Occupational Health Screening Information

Information for Junior Fresher BScM students regarding Occupational Health screening
with the Health Service Providers (Parent Hospitals).
Once a student accepts the offer of a place on the BScM Midwifery programme he/she will be assigned by
the College to one of the two parent hospitals for clinical placements: The Rotunda or the Coombe Women
and Infants University Hospital.
As health service providers, the parent hospitals are required to carry out specific Occupational Health
screening for all staff and in particular staff involved in direct patient care. This screening protects both the
healthcare workers and the women for whom they care.
As a midwifery student will be involved in procedures prone to exposure to blood/body fluids, evidence of
non infectivity to hepatitis B and C must be submitted. If a Junior Fresher midwifery student cannot submit
this evidence from a validated source (either Irish or UK Occupational Health Service) blood samples will be
taken during the screening process to determine the immune status of the student.
The consent, laboratory forms and samples for EPP (Exposure Prone Procedures) bloods will be witnessed
and verified with the student’s passport or drivers license details at time of testing by the Occupational
Health team. The student must attend Occupational Health screening with either of these photo IDs.
In the event of the student’s immunization status requiring vaccination this programme will be given by the
Occupational Health team in the parent hospital and must be completed in its entirety. The same photo ID
will be required for consent. The vaccination dates are predetermined and failure of a student to attend on
the appointed date will result in the student having to attend their GP for the vaccination course.
The Junior Fresher midwifery student will be required to complete an Occupational Health screening
questionnaire. The details of this questionnaire are confidential and seen only by the Occupational Health
team in the parent hospital.
Details of previous illness and vaccinations and evidence of the following will be sought:

Two (2) documented records of having received Two (2) doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps,
Rubella vaccines) that is signed and dated by a Health Care Provider

Records of BCG (usually given at birth)

BCG and MMR Records available from GP or National/Local Health Offices

Any records of Varicella Vaccine given or a known history of having had chickenpox.

Previous Hepatitis B vaccine records (may have been given if working in the health care sector, but
evidence must be from a validated source either an Irish or a UK Occupational Health Service).

Previous EPP blood results (if taken with another health care provider)
Students will not be certified Fit for Practice until vaccination (if necessary) has commenced and all
requested documentation is received.
Please refer to this information prior to the orientation day with the parent hospital and bring a passport
photo signed and dated on the back. This photo is for the files of the Practice Development team in the
parent hospital. The Practice Development team will supervise and guide your clinical learning.
