CRAFT and MAPS CRAFT and MAPS provide broader lenses to encourage writers to consider the broader context of a writing assignment while also helping the writer determine when, how, and why she may decide to use a particular element. Both CRAFT and MAPS help writers think intentionally about their thinking process and facilitate identify, explore, and employ a writer’s craft. By inviting writers to be intentional about the craft of composition – both print and digital - writers can realize their potential in academic, political, and community contexts. CRAFT Context – the situation for which you are writing. Role – the voice in which you are writing. Audience – the person or people for which you are writing. Format – the type of writing you are producing. For example: speech, article, letter… Topic – the subject matter on which you are writing. MAPS Mode – the genre of the text Media – the form(s) in which the text is created Audience – the reader, listener, or viewer of the text, both intended and incidental Purpose – the action the writer takes, in academic and personal ways Situation – the context for the writer herself, as well as the demands of the writing task
