Medical Negligence litigation has become a far more prominent aspect of legal
practice than formerly. There have been important recent decisions which consider
complicated issues of the standard of care, causation, proof, vicarious liability and
damages. New issues arise such as the possibility of suing for damages for hospitalacquired infections or in cases of what courts have called “wrongful birth” claims.
The conference which will address all of these themes will be held at Trinity College
Dublin on the morning of Saturday, 28 March. The team of lecturers have special
expertise in their area.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Neville Cox LL.B., Ph.D., (Dub.), Barrister, is Senior Lecturer in Law and a Fellow of
Trinity College Dublin. He is author of Defamation Law (2008), and Blasphemy and
the Law (2000) and co-author of Sport and the Law (2004). He is Director of the
Master of Laws degree programme at Trinity.
Ciaran Craven is a practising barrister. He lectures in Medical Law on the LL.M.
degree programme at Trinity College Dublin. He is the co-editor of Medical
Negligence Litigation: Emerging Issues and The Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004:
Implications for Personal Injury Litigation and co-author of Psychiatry and the Law.
He is co-editor of the Quarterly Review of Tort Law.
John Healy is a practising barrister, specialising in medical negligence and personal
injury litigation. He is author of Medical Malpractice Law, to be published later this
year as a volume of the Brehon Library Series, Medical Negligence: Common Law
Perspectives, published by Sweet & Maxwell in 1999 and Irish Law of Evidence,
published by Round Hall Thompson in 2004.
Liz Heffernan is a Lecturer in Law and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. She was
awarded an LL.M. degree by Dalhousie University, and an LL.M. and J.S.D. degrees
by the University of Chicago. A former law clerk at the United States Court of
Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Chicago, she has taught at Washington and Lee
University, and at University College Dublin. A former joint editor of the Dublin
University Law Journal, she is the co-author of Exidentiary Foundations: Irish Edition
(2008), Scientific Evidence: Fingerprints and DNA (2006) and Evidence: Cases and
Materials (2005).
Des Ryan is a Lecturer in Law at Trinity College Dublin. He holds first class honours
law degrees from Trinity College and from Oxford University, and was formerly a
Foundation Scholar and Gold Medallist of the Law School at Trinity College Dublin.
He has published articles on tort law in a number of journals.
Ray Ryan is a practising barrister. He has lectured in tort law and published a
number of articles on the law of negligence.
