THE AUDITIONS COMMITTEE EVALUATES DIGITAL VIDEO SAMPLES WITH THE SAME ATTENTION PAID TO THOSE AT THE LIVE AUDITION. WHILE A VIDEO AUDITION IS NOT IDEAL IN THAT THE STUDENT AND THE COMMITTEE ARE UNABLE TO INTERACT IN PERSON, THIS FORMAT HAS PROVEN SUCCESSFUL IN THE PAST. A NUMBER OF STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED PREACCEPTED STATUS TO OUR MUSICAL THEATRE BFA PROGRAM BASED ON RECORDED AUDITION SAMPLES. Part B “Part B” is the Digital Video Samples Submission. Your Musical Theatre Audition Form/Appointment Application will not be considered complete for follow up until you submit your digital video samples to YouTube or by hard copy in DVD format. You can post video samples to YouTube and secure them with a privacy setting that only allows those with the link to view. Students that answer “NO” to the last question on the Part A form, will be contacted by an audition representative for further inquiry. *Read below: *If a student has no access to recording technology (including a smart cell phone that can record short video clips) in which to record Part B he/she should only submit Part A of the application as noted above. The committee will evaluate the application accordingly and work toward an alternative for Part B. The video clips are used as a point of reference for the overall application procedure and those with an inability to complete Part B should not feel disadvantaged. For those providing the digital samples proceed with the instructions below). TWO WAYS TO GET US YOUR VIDEO/DIGITAL SAMPLES 1. Upload your video/digital samples to Youtube.com. You can do so by creating a private Youtube link that limits only those with the link “address” to view the video. Be sure to send the video link address/addresses with your application Form Part A for committee access. or 2. Burn a DVD with your video/digital samples and mail it to: MUSICAL THEATRE BFA COORDINATOR C/O SCHOOL OF THEATRE AND DANCE ECU MESSICK THEATRE, MAIL STOP 553 GREENVILLE, NC 27858 For video/digital samples please include: Singing Sample - Two song clips: 1) a ballad, and 2) an up-tempo selection. Both song selections of your choice must be from musicals. We encourage you to demonstrate your ability/potential to sing in a historic or "legit" style and in a contemporary pop/belt style for your song selections. Our program emphasizes the ability to skillfully transition between historic and contemporary musical theatre styles, so demonstrating this in your audition will be advantageous. Your accompaniment on the video clip can be either piano or a “karaoke track.” A cappella selections will not be considered. Acting Sample - One monologue. This can be from a play, film or monologue book that demonstrates your current skill level/potential as an actor. The monologue should last no more than 60 seconds. Choose a piece (comic or serious) that is appropriate for your age and type. Dance Sample - If you dance, and it is among your primary performance strengths, please include a dance clip sample. This can be a clip of you in performance or just doing a simple combination of steps that shows your skill level in any or several areas of dance; jazz, tap, hip-hop, modern and/or ballet. Other Performance Sample(s) - You may also include short clips of you in performances as optional sources for our committee to consider as part of this evaluation. Video Interview Responses - In addition to the recorded performance sample clips you upload, be sure to include recorded responses to the questions below. This is an essential component of the video audition process. In addition to you talent/skill level we also want to get to know about who you are as a person. Question # 1: Why have you chosen ECU as an option for your performance training and education? Question # 2: What is your ultimate professional/career goal? Question # 3: Why pursue a 4-year BFA degree rather than moving directly into the professional arena after high school? NOTE: The maximum time allowed for the performance samples and interview responses is 10 minutes. IMPORTANT: If you use Youtube.com it is best to name your video/digital samples so they are easily identified among many! Though YouTube will assign a random link address to your files, what you name each file also appears when the link is searched. So, for example, if your name is Jamie Dram, then your video clips should be named something like this: Jamie Dram Comedy Song Jamie Dram Pop Ballad Jamie Dram Monologue Jamie Dram Dance Jamie Dram Interview By properly naming your clips the audition committee can find your clips accurately and quickly. Again, thank you for your interest in ECU. We look forward to reviewing Part A and Part B of your audition appointment application soon.
