Greetings everyone! I am seeing a number of requests for contacts by our members for job and
internship opportunities. While it is the season for that, I want to share a few important thoughts on
what we all should do before putting ourselves out there.
1. One of the most important aspects of preparing for a job or internship search is first knowing
your goal. Not only do you need to know what skills and characteristics you have to offer an
employer, you should know what type of job or internship will suit your interests and values.
2. Before you begin applying for jobs and networking, make sure your resume is ready to be
sent to employers. You should bring your resume to Career Services during our afternoon
drop-in hours to be reviewed.
3. Make sure that you know how to write an excellent cover letter that is specifically written for
the opportunity. Bring this to Career Services for a review as well.
4. Networking is important because it can lead to mentoring relationships as well as internship
and job opportunities. The opportunity to network can happen at any time, but it’s critical to
remember that good networking is relational, not transactional. While it’s important to be
able to talk about yourself, DO NOT info dump on someone. Instead, have a conversation
and see if you can get them talking while you listen.
5. While we’re talking about networking, be sure to tell everyone in your life what you are
trying to accomplish. This includes your family, friends, parents of friends, classmates, etc.
You may be surprised by who they know!
6. Researching specific companies and positions is vital to your search for the most appropriate
job and workplace.
7. Keep in mind that the search process requires a considerable amount of effort and time.
Think of it like going to class or to the gym. You have to schedule time to do it.
8. Correspondence with employers or potential networking contacts should always be
professional and courteous. Unless told otherwise, it’s always Mr. Smith, or Ms. Jones (use
their correct last name, of course). Always send thank you notes when you have contact with
someone.
9. If you have questions, need assistance or support please know that the Office of Career
Services is there to assist both our students and alumni.
May you career journey be successful!
