How Green Can You Get?
Finding Sustainable Solutions in a “Down” Economy
In this panel discussion, policy leaders and decision-makers will discuss strategies
and outcomes from their experience in a variety of settings – from city management to
University facilities management. From these varied perspectives, participants will
gain an understanding of the complexity of the issues – made more difficult by limited
resources in a “down” economy – and how to design and implement strategies.
Carl F. Teichman is Director of Government and Community Relations for Illinois
Wesleyan University. He serves on the IWU GREENetwork committee and is the
University President's point person on sustainability issues. Mr. Teichman holds a BA
degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and a MA degree from Illinois State
University. He serves as Vice-Chair of the McLean County Regional Planning
Commission and the board of the Downtown Bloomington Association. Mr. Teichman
is active in numerous civic organizations.
Mercy Davison has been with the Town of Normal since 2001, when she started as a
Town Attorney. In 2004 she became the Town Planner. Mercy's primary duties include
coordinating the orderly growth and development of the Town and working on various
environmental initiatives at the direction of the city manager. Mercy is the staff liaison
to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Mercy also operates an
organic vegetable farm with her husband Bill.
James Hubbard has been with Heartland Community College since 2006, when he was
hired as the Division Director of Facilities. Mr. Hubbard's primary duties include
campus building and grounds maintenance, operations and care, cleaning, vehicle
fleet management, safety and security services. His experience includes
environmental, energy, physical plant, vehicle, and construction management. He is a
registered Texas Engineer-In-Training, and is a member of the McLean County
Disaster Council, Association of Energy Consultants, International Association of
Facility Managers, US Green Building Council member, and Association of Physical
Plant Administrators. He is a retired United States Air Force service member.
Bruce L. Maxey, AIA, LEED AP, is a Principal at BLDD Architects, Inc., and has been
with the firm for 17 years. He has recently been appointed to the Illinois Energy
Conservation Code Council. Among many other projects, Bruce served as the project
manager for the Workforce Development Center at Heartland Community College
(slated to be the Capital Development Board's first LEED project) and as project
manager for the on-going Campus Development Project at the college.
Our Panel Moderator:
Don Cavallini is Director of Outreach for Heartland Community College. He worked as
a teacher at Lexington High School for 34 years. He represents residents in District 1
as a member of the McLean County Board.
