Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, exceeds healthy limits. It is commonly defined as a body mass index (weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher. (Encarta 2008) OBESITY HAS MANY CAUSES: Genetics: Genes play a part in how your body balances calories and energy. Children whose parents are obese also tend to be overweight. Physical Inactivity :Overweight people are usually less physically active than normal weight people. Seriously overweight people may have difficulty moving. OTHER CAUSES THAT MAY LEAD TO THE OBESITY PROBLEM ARE: Gender /Age Medical Problems Lifestyle MOST OF THE TIME THE OBESITY HAS EFFECTS ON THE BODY. OBESITY MIGHT CAUSE diabetes - Obesity is the major cause of type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes begins in adulthood. Obesity can cause resistance to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. When obesity causes insulin resistance, the blood sugar becomes elevated. Even moderate obesity dramatically increases the risk of diabetes. cancer - Men who are overweight have a higher risk of colon and prostate cancers. OBESITY CAN ALSO CAUSE : heart disease joint problems high blood pressure My Action Research Why Did I Choose This Topic? I chose this topic because there are a lot of obese students in my school, and I wanted to know more about their feelings. How Did I Get My Resources? I gave a questionnaire to 37 students , 12 of them are obese and 25 were regular students. And their ages were from 12 years to 15. My Questionnaire Results The Feelings of The Obese Students in Omar Prep School The first question in my questionnaire was about the weight of the obese students. The students who filled my questionnaire were about 67110 KG Q2. Have your friends ever laughed at you because of your weight ? • 35% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 65% answered ‘No’ 35% yes no 65% Q3. Do you think teachers treat you like the other students ? • 65% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 35% answered ‘No’ 35% yes no 65% Q4. Have you ever gone on a diet ? • 65% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 35% answered ‘No’ 35% yes no 65% Q5. Do you think obesity can affect your grades and marks ? • 25% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 75% answered ‘No’ 25% yes no most reasons for this affect were the different way of thinking 75% Q6. Have you experienced any problem in the school because you are overweight ? Do you think obesity can affect the students’ grades ? • 16% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 84% answered ‘No’ Some reasons : - The fats can affect the brain - He only cares about the food Q5. Do you think the fat students are different from the other students? • 16% of the students answered ‘Yes’ while 84% answered ‘No’ - The physical appearance - Only think about food - Everybody hate him Conclusion In my opinion , the regular students have a wrong idea about the obese students in my school because the fat students don’t feel that their weight makes them different , but the regular students do.
