Collaborative Filtering Exercise Step #0: Form 16 teams (numbered 1 to 16). Record team # here: ____. (You will turn in this sheet at end of activity.) Step #1a: Designate one person as READER, one as RECORDER, and the rest as VOTERs. (If there are only 2 team members in a team the READER also serves as RECORDER.) Step #1b: VOTERs: memorize your team number! Step #2: Spend 3 minutes brainstorming a 5-7 word tagline for this course. Your objective is to create something that will appeal to other classmates. Write down you tagline here: Step #3: Each team receives 10 Lego. Give them to your VOTER(s). Step #4: Voting Round #1 In this step the VOTERs decide which other teams to distribute their Lego to. A VOTER can give all of them to one team or each one to a different one. Each role has a different function in this step: the READER and RECORDER stay put while the VOTER(s) will roam around the room. VOTERs will visit READERs, hear the tagline read by the READER, and decide how many Lego to give to that team’s RECORDER. Very important! When a VOTER gives a RECORDER Lego, the RECORDER must write down what team # it came from along with the number received. (HINT: record in column #1 on back of this paper.) Step #5: Prof. Johnson will do a roll call of teams and the RECORDER announces how many votes received. RECORDER gives Lego to VOTER(s) on their team. [Any teams with zero Lego will receive another one for round #2.] Proj. Johnson will also announce the weights for round #2. (RECORDERs write these down in column Y on next page.) Step #6: Voting Round #2 Like Step #4, VOTERS once again pick which other group to give Lego to. Votes (Lego) from highest rank teams in earlier round are more valuable than votes from lower ranked teams. Step #7: Once all Lego are distributed, the RECORDER completes Table #2. Multiple number of Lego received in second round of voting times the team weight. Step #8: Prof. Johnson makes a second roll call and RECORDER announces their score (based on weighted votes). Team with highest score wins! Originally created by Prof. Steven L. Johnson at Temple U.
