Name and brief description (1 – 2 paragraphs) of the Project requiring an Intern(s): Parent and Child Characteristics of Families Participating in Parent-Mediated Social Skills Interventions for Autism A growing literature indicates that parent-mediated social skills interventions, such as Children’s Friendship Training (CFT; Frankel & Myatt, 2003) and the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®; Laugeson & Frankel, 2010) increase social competence and friendships among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In CFT and PEERS®, parents are trained to become active agents who provide social coaching to their children during and after treatment. Therefore, it is important to ask the question: which parent factors impact the treatment outcomes of children who participate in CFT and PEERS®? Currently, at the NYU Child Study Center, we are conducting a pilot study on outcomes for children who complete CFT and PEERS® that involves measuring parent and child characteristics before and after intervention. In preparation for future studies of treatment outcome, the current project involves examining baseline measures of parents’ functioning and their relationships with the baseline measures of their children. In this research project, one intern will: 1) Become familiar with the literature on CFT and PEERS® 2) Critically review and summarize the current literature surrounding the relationship between characteristics of children with ASD and their parents 3) Perform statistical analyses to characterize relationships between baseline measures of parents and children 4) Learn how to summarize empirical results for scientific presentation CAMS Summer Internship Program Supervisor Template 4. Number of Interns requested: 1 6. Brief summary of proposed Intern responsibilities: Conduct a comprehensive literature review for the assigned research project Organize and quality control the data – e.g., perform data entry if needed, aggregate relevant measures from the database, access and check original participant chart data against the database for accuracy Perform statistical analyses examining relevant relationships between measures and differences between groups (e.g., correlations, t-tests, ANOVAs) Write regular reports summarizing findings Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings in the lab 7.
