Learning from and with Peers
All tutors can be unnecessarily hard on themselves after a particularly taxing writing
appointment. After going through my video with Andy, I realized that some things are out of my
hands. The video I chose was a particularly frustrating session as I had spent an hour with a
writer on an RC 1 paper and felt as though I had done nothing in that entire period of time. Andy
helped me realize that I had made several good choices within the appointment. I think a fresh
set of eyes on a video is important to remind tutors that we are not completely incompetent –
though we may feel that way sometimes. We have been given the tools to help writers to the best
of our abilities. If we use those tools with a positive attitude, there is not a whole lot left for us to
do. So, we as tutors must stop giving ourselves such a hard time. We do good work, and that is
nothing to feel sorry about.
