VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION Beef Project Key Leader Purpose: To broaden and strengthen the 4-H program by training project leaders to work more effectively with 4-H project members and coordinating county activities related to the 4-H Beef project. Success Criteria: A key leader is a teacher and/or resource for other less experienced 4-H leaders or in cases of small county project enrollment, 4-H members. A key leader serves for the purpose of improving the county wide 4-H program not for the benefit of an individual club. This leader will have the opportunity and is encouraged to be a communications link between the beef or animal science project leaders and the Extension staff in the exchange of ideas, needs, and evaluation of programs. Coordination of county activities may also be part of this position. Responsibilities: • Help design and teach beef project training meeting(s) for leaders or members • Serve as a telephone resource in the beef project area • Follow-up on key leader referrals • Attend Annual Key Leader Training Meetings • Submit 1 or more articles for the 4-H newsletter • Keep up-to-date in cattle production and 4-H beef rules and requirements • Communicate one-to-one with new project leaders • Be part of, but hopefully not chair countywide beef project committee • May also work with beef project committee to o Set up training and practice sessions for member judging events o Coordinate Quality Assurance and Ethics requirements o Coordinate beef weighing and tattooing o Secure superintendents for the fair o Secure judges for the fair • Help with promotion of 4-H Beef project Time Required: Commitment will vary during different times of the year, but experienced key leaders estimate an average of 2-3 hours per week or one day per month for specific key leader activities.
