VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION
Livestock Superintendent
Purpose:
To coordinate judging of livestock projects at the 4-H Fair/Show
Success Criteria:
Conduct a positive learning experience for 4-H families and volunteers in
completion of judging of livestock projects.
Time Required:
December – August
Responsibilities:
• Review fair book with project committee.
• Animal Identification (Tagging, Tattooing, etc)
In cooperation with local Extension Office staff:
a) Arrange date and location for animal tagging or tattooing
b) Secure supplies for animal identification (i.e., tattoos, tags, etc.)
c) Arrange for helpers
d) Secure copies of :
1. Illinois State Fair Premier Entry Forms or other necessary State
Fair forms needed.
2. Enrolled project members
e) Pick up and return supplies to Extension Office.
f) Supervise weighing, and identification process.
• Inspect facilities and request improvements of maintenance, as needed.
• Organize and orient Assistant Superintendents for help.
• Proofread Fair Book.
• Secure and orient Judges
• Set up Carcass Show, if necessary.
• Assign stalls/pens to members.
• Set up barns prior to fair with assistance from 4-H volunteers and
members.
• Conduct project check-in at the fair:
a) Set up scales, if used.
b) Weigh animals.
c) Check health papers, registration papers, records, or other verification
papers needed.
d) Verify judges prior to show day.
e) Post show order and schedule the evening prior to the show.
• Set up show arena:
a) Wet down arena
b) Secure needed tables, chairs, notebooks, pencils, ribbons, etc. for show
day
c) Put up needed gates
d) Verify microphones, speakers, etc. are in place and functioning.
• Supervise the show to keep exhibitors and spectators informed, provide
assistance to judges, maintain timeliness of show.
• Verify completed judges’ sheets and turn all necessary paperwork in to
Extension office.
• Supervise 4-H Auction.
• Supervise barn clean-up.
• Review show and make suggestions for next year.

Target Dates:
Fall:
Review past year’s exhibit class requirements and suggest changes for next
fair book.
Select Date and secure supplies for project animal identification.
Winter:
Conduct Project Identification process (weigh, tag, tattoo, premier entries,
etc.)
Submit final class listing for fair book.
Communicate with Fair/Show committee and attend meetings, as needed.
Spring:
Contact and confirm judges.
Contact trophy donors and award sponsors.
Request improvements to facilities, as needed.
Secure Assistant Superintendents.
One week
prior to Fair:
Set up stalls/pens.
Prepare barns, scales, etc.
Provide orientation to helpers
Fair Week:
Conduct 4-H Show
