Catch a DRAGON by the “TALE”
What it is
“Catch a DRAGON by the TALE” is an optional reading incentive program designed to motivate
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders to read a variety of books. Please note that students will not receive a
grade for participating, nor are they required to participate.
How it works
Students will be given their first Reading Record sheet the first week of October. There are five sheets total
and students will have the school year to complete them. Each time the student reads a book or someone
reads a book to him/her, write the title of the book on the Reading Record sheet. (A chapter book may count
as two books read.) When there are 20 titles listed on the sheet, a parent or guardian should sign the bottom
so the student can return the sheet to the library. (Make sure the student’s name is at the top of the sheet.)
Each time a student turns in a Reading Record sheet, he/she will be given a special dragon bookmark and
will be given another reading sheet. Also, students will be able to write their name on a special accent piece
which will be placed on the bulletin board in the library. Certificates will be given out at the end of the
school year for students who complete and turn in at least one sheet. For each sheet turned in, a dragon
sticker will be attached to the certificate. (Completed sheets will be kept in a binder in the library.) The goal
is for students to read at least 100 books, turning in five (5) Reading Record sheets. (Encourage your
student(s) to read books about a wide variety of topics in order to expose them to different genres, such as
biographies, fairy tales, mysteries, poetry, fiction, etc.)



The books read can come from any source (KHE library, public library, book fair, friends, home, etc.) and do
not have to come from the KHE library.
The sheets should be signed when they are completely filled out with 20 titles (before they are turned in to
the library). Please do not sign sheets until all 20 titles are completely filled in.
Any book read by or to the student between Oct. 1st, 2015 and April 30th, 2016 will count.
The program ends on Saturday, April 30th, 2016. All Reading Records sheets must be turned in no later
than Friday May 6th to be counted!
Each sheet must have 20 titles and contain a parent or guardian signature, before it can be turned in.
Partially-completed sheets will be returned to be completed.
Students: Turn in your sheet to the library. You will get a new sheet when you turn in your completed sheet.
Each book counts only once.
